Tricks by Cambria Hebert

Love can play tricks on your heart...
After serving several years in the United States Marine Corps, Sergeant Tucker Patton decides to hang up his uniform and go to work at a private investigative firm owned by his buddy. His boxes are packed and he's got one foot out the door when a phone call changes everything.
Instead of going to North Carolina, he heads to New York City to literally step into the life of his twin brother, who died under suspicious circumstances. But pretending to be someone else isn't easy.
Especially when the person you're supposed to be is wanted dead.
Not only that, but he's going from being blissfully single to living with his brother's woman. An uptight, no-nonsense lawyer.
Charlotte Rose Carter doesn't have time for fun and games. She graduated with honors and made all the right moves fresh out of college to jumpstart her career as a successful young lawyer. She even snagged the most eligible bachelor in New York City's corporate world.
So what if her and Max's relationship isn't burning up the sheets? So what if their life doesn't read like a chapter from a sizzling romance novel? This is the real world, and in the real world that stuff is just fantasy.
Until it isn't.
Suddenly, just the slightest touch or a single glance from Max has her heart doing somersaults. Suddenly, the lackluster relationship begins to spark, and Charlotte finds herself tied in a knot of desire.
But she has no idea about the tricks being played right under her perky little nose.

Actual rating: 4.5 stars! I think Tricks may be my favorite standalone of this series! I absolutely loved the characters, and it was the perfect mix of suspense and romance. I adored Charlotte, and Tucker had me swooning with his bad boy charm and genuinely funny POV. This is one romantic mystery that you don't want to miss! I love how Cambria Hebert uses double POVs to tell the story, because it's so nice having both of the main characters' thoughts and feelings. Also, I totally loved their POVs and personalities. Charlotte is a no-nonsense lawyer who doesn't know how to let her hair down. She's pretty much stuck in a rut with her life; her job takes a lot out of her, and she's slipped into a comfortable relationship with her boyfriend, Max. But there's a spark within her, and it takes one leather-jacket wearing soldier to unleash her inner wild. Tucker was all set on moving to North Carolina when the Feds show up at his door to tell him that his brother is dead. They want him to finish the job, and Tucker is all too happy to comply. He wants revenge; he wants justice done to the men who killed his twin brother. But revenge and rage are not the only emotions consuming this man. There's also grief, and pain, and an all-encompassing desire for the pretty lawyer he finds in his brother's home. I think the characters, and their relationship with each other, was my favorite part of this story. I loved how the author developed their relationship. At first, Charlotte is unaware of Max being dead and that the man standing before her is, in fact, his twin brother. A brother she's never met. I'm glad Cambria didn't draw out that aspect of it; she timed the plot point where Charlotte finds out that Max is really dead and that the guy before her is Tucker perfectly. It fit into the story-line, and after that, their relationship feels more genuine (not that it wasn't before, but there was that whole secrecy on Tucker's part). Even though this was fast-paced, I thought that the feelings that developed between them were real and raw. Grief is raw. Honest. Intense. I really loved how the author drew from Tucker's and Charlotte's grief to make them seem more real. To make their feelings more heartfelt. I know that Cambria was worried about how people would feel when Tucker and Charlotte have sex after Charlotte learns that Max is dead. (See, Cambria, I DO read your acknowledgments! :) But, to me? I thought it fit the story-line. And I also know that, while Charlotte felt incredibly guilty, it's natural to seek out companionship when grieving. It's natural to look for life. I loved how the author showed that side to the characters, the part where they just give into their desires without thought, without reason. It was raw. It was honest. It was real. Like I said, the plot was fast-paced. It was a mix of suspense, romance, cute moments, and heart-stopping action. It was the perfect blend of thriller and contemporary, just how I like them. This series just keeps getting better and better. And Tricks is, by far, my favorite. :) I can't wait to see what else Cambria has up her sleeve with Tattoo!!!

Love every book in this series. This has a loose association with Text, where all of the others have been totally unrelated, but they still can be read in any order. (No Cliffhanger to-be-continued REALLY love that!!!!) All are the perfect blend of mystery/suspense, romance, and are very Hot. Love that Tucker is such an alpha!

I loved this book. It did kind of bother me that Charlotte and Tucker jumped into bed so quickly, especially since she had been living with Max, Tucker's twin, for a year and he'd just told her that Max was gone, but that issue was resolved later on in the book with Max's note. It's full of action, lots of sexual tension, a bit of mystery and a pretty perfect happily ever after. It was well written, and the writing style was easy to read. The story flowed very smoothly and all bases were covered. No huge time gaps or holes in this story. Tucker was a great guy and hero, jumping in and protecting Charlotte with everything he had, including taking a bullet for her. He was rough and tough and sweet at the same time, grieving his twin's death while trying to fight his growing feelings for Charlotte.

Cambria Hebert never fails to impress. The Take It Off series gets better and better with each book. And her bad boys get hotter and hotter, although, for the record, Cam is still my fav Take It Off book boyfriend. Tucker comes pretty close though. This book starts off with a thrilling car chase that left me breathless, and the action just intensified from there, making this an enthralling and intriguing read from start to finish. I was sucked into the story and if anyone was watching as I read it, they would have thought I was mad, because at times I was smiling like a loon, at times my eyes were as huge as saucers, and more often than not, I had that wicked I've-got-a-dirty-little-secret look on my face. Yup, the sex in this story was quite smoking! Tucker was amazing, and even though what happened to Max was devastating, I'm sure Charlotte was thanking her lucky stars that he walked into her life. Her relationship with Max was extremely lack-luster, and Tucker turned up the heat to scorching the minute he was introduced in this story. Suspense, action, romance, passion fill the pages of this book and there never a dull moment. I was on the edge of my seat, not only waiting to see if the good guys would defeat the bad guys, but to see if Charlie and Tucker would finally stop feeling guilty about their desire to be together. This was one hot read that I could not put down. Another fantastic addition to this amazing series. Oh, by the way, I loved that Nathan and Honor made a special guest appearance in this story!! Just added to my excitement.

Twins have a special bond from birth. After spending 9 months together growing, it is said that bond is one that follows them through life. Max and Tucker once shared this closeness. Now, they have become direct opposites although their affection for each other has not changed. Our story begins with the chase scene from hell worthy of any Terminator movie. Just when you think poor Max will get away, the unthinkable happens. This leaves Tucker to take his place and continue the adventure. The only problem is Charlotte. She is not in on the game. She does not even know there is a game going on. Prepare yourself for the ride of your life. I picked up this book and was unable to put it down until the adventure was over. No dull moments here. Whether it is the suspense, the action thrills of the chase, or the HOT SCORCHING scenes, you will hold your breath and hope our characters survive the plot twists. Cambria Hebert has given us a gem to cherish here. I for one, will be reading more from this author in the future. Having discovered her unique writing style and gift of thrilling prose, I have become a fan.

My rating: 5 of 5 ¿¿ Ex US Marine, Tucker Patton, on his way home from an anonymous one night stand, is intercepted on his doorstep with news that shakes him to his core. His twin brother Max, whom he had not seen in quite some time, had apparently been killed while involved in some kind of investigation. Being an identical twin, Tucker could quite easily take his place and find out what and who got his brother murdered. But no one bothered to tell him, that when taking over his brother's life, he would also be taking on his live-in girlfriend.... With her life working out according to plan, Charlotte Carter could not complain. She was steadily climbing the ladder at her law firm and life with Max was.....well, it was comfortable and good. They didn't see each other that often, since both were working all hours of the day and night, but they got along really well and had the same drive and dedication. Surely passion was overrated. But something has changed since Max came home unexpected, she can't stop watching him. Whatever caused the change has Charlotte quite worked up. Every gesture, look or touch of his sets off a response in her body unlike anything she has experienced before. But it isn't until she gets a glimpse through an open bathroom door, that she realizes something is very wrong. Tucker did not expect his brother's uptight girlfriend to harbour such a simmering fire under that buttoned up exterior. Nor did he expect to respond to her with such a fierce and protective need. Knowing he had put himself and possibly Charlotte in danger only fuelled his instincts to stay as close to her as possible, but it made keeping her in the dark difficult.  In a decision to share whatever information he has, Tucker leaves Charlotte shocked and torn between guilt and happiness. ***** I swear the books in this series keep getting better and better!!  Each book is easily read as a standalone and although there are brief references to characters or events from previous stories, they do not have any true impact on the current book. Cambria Hebert once again reaches a fantastic balance between a scorching hot romance and a wickedly sleek suspense novel. Add to it a dollop of heart-felt emotion, and you have the recipe for a fabulous page-turner!! Tucker is absolutely scrumptious from tip to toe..... A 'bad boy' with morals and principles, who simply has never met the right woman to make him even think of more than a passing fancy. Until Charlotte, who is absolutely everything he never thought he'd ever want.  Living according to a well-planned out script, created to achieve maximum approval, Charlotte is intent on doing everything right. But she never really stops to think what it is she wants. She simply assumed those things were one and the same. Until Tucker shows her that she has had blinders on for most of her life and too much has been left unexplored.  The contrast in characters and yet the perfection of their fit, is phenomenal. Both are intelligent enough not to let first impressions rule their opinions of the other for too long and discover a treasure of depth and context hidden underneath the thin layer of initial observation. Ms. Hebert's writing becomes more smooth and easy with each subsequent book, flowing so natural and effortless, it is a pleasure to read. Although sexual tension is present throughout the story, sexual situations don't overcrowd it but enhance the intriguing tale. And most importantly, the actual story line that brings the two protagonists together is not forgotten at any time, in favour of the developing romance, something that unfortunately I see happen all too often. Ms. Hebert stays true to and follows through on the full scope of the story, which gives us some high intensity action as well. Even if you have read any of the previous books in this series, read this one! It is absolutely worth it! ¿This is sharp, steamy, sensational romantic suspense!!¿ **ARC provided in return for an honest review.**

My Review 5.0 Star Review – Tricks (Take It Off #6) I recommend this book. I enjoyed this book by Cambria. This book includes passion, laughs, secrets, and murder! We met Tucker in the last story "Text". Nathan and Honor make a cameo in this book. Tucker must solve the mystery that his brother uncovered before he was killed. He has to protect Charlotte and stay alive in order to bring the killers to justice. Tucker gets horrible news and must drop everything and step into his late twin brother Max's shoes. He must find his brothers killer by going undercover as his brother. Problem is his brother has men after him that already think he is dead. He has girlfriend that Tucker knows nothing about. Can he fool everyone and still get the job done? Tucker enjoys the ladies but in this story he must only interact with one. Will he be able to hold it together and not break his cover? Charlotte can't figure out what is different about Max. He likes different thinks, acts different toward her, and she feels a different kind of sexual pull to him. Will she figure out what is different before it's too late? Torch (Take It Off) Tease (Take It Off) Tempt (Take It Off) Text (Take It Off) Tipsy (Take It Off)

I fall in love more and more with each story in the Take It Off Series. Tricks is certainly no exception.  Tucker Patton is a former Marine who is about to move to Florida to start a new life.  Before he get’s the chance to do that, the FBI shows up at his door with a mission that he must accept. Tucker’s twin Max, was working for the FBI trying to uncover some shady dealings within the company he works for.  Unfortunately Max died and the FBI expects Tucker to take his place so know one will find out that Max met his end. Tucker agrees to avenge his brothers death, but there was one little problem, Max had a girlfriend named Charlotte, and now Tucker, who was completely different from his brother, has to play the part with her as well.  I love Charlotte’s character. She is very job driven, dedicated, completely business at the office and at home, but for some reason Tucker (well, Max to her) is a bit different and it makes her different as well. This is a new part of their relationship that excites her and never once thinks well maybe this isn’t Max.  But, if Tucker can survive this mission, and the truth comes out, will Charlotte be willing to have a relationship with him?  There is so much to this amazing story. It’s a five star for sure! I loved the suspense, the romance, and the chemistry between Tucker and Charlotte. I went from having to fan myself from all the steaminess to laughing out loud at some of Tucker’s dialogue.  He is definitely one of my favorite book boys!!  Cambria Hebert as once again astounded the readers and provided a flawless story that will have you waiting in anticipation for what can come next  in the series!   So do yourself a favor and hop on  the Team Tucker bandwagon and fall in love!!!
