About the Author

Alaa Abd-Elsayed, MD is serving currently as the Medical Director of UW Pain Services, medical Director of the Chronic Pain Program, Section Head of Chronic Pain Management and Assistant Professor of Anaesthesiology. He graduated from Medical school in 2000, finished a research fellowship from Cleveland Clinic in 2009, residency training in Anaesthesiology in 2013 from University of Cincinnati and Chronic Pain Fellowship from University of Cincinnati in 2014. He published more than 100 peer reviewed manuscripts, presented more than 200 presentations on the national and international level, he serves on the editorial board for dozens of journals, edited 3 books and involved in several societies on the national and international levels.​

Description: This book is comprehensive discussing basic anatomy, diagnostic criteria, and management strategies regarding trigeminal nerve pain. The benefit to the book is the inclusion of non-pharmacologic therapies such as nerve blocks and physical therapy. The book also discusses therapies that are currently experimental. A management algorithm is included to serve as a handy review guide.
Purpose: The goal of the book is to provide clinicians with a means to understand a debilitating disease and to provide modalities to address the disorder, including pharmacological, interventional, and surgical. It is a great review book. It meets the objectives of providing comprehensive review of the syndrome, including epidemiology, anatomy, diagnosis, and different treatment strategies.
Audience: This book is written for residents and practitioners in pain management. The target audience includes anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, surgery, family medicine, and internal medicine specialties with pain medicine as subspecialty. The editor, who is also the lead author, is an expert in the field of headache pain and has excellent credentials to be authoring such a review book.
Features: The book begins with anatomy of the trigeminal nerve, which is critical to understanding the etiology of the pain that occurs and the potential treatment modalities. The book explores the prevalence and incidence of this syndrome and then the diagnostic criteria, while listing other diseases with similar clinical presentation. It covers basic physical exam and imaging that is potentially needed for this diagnosis. It further expands upon the non-pharmacologic modalities such as acupuncture and vitamins. The book also discusses the functional and psychological impact on patients and their quality of life. The physical therapy and rehabilitation sections are impressive with clear drawings on applications of pressure for myofascial release. For the medical management strategies, the book presents the drug doses with potential adverse effects. For interventional techniques it provides pictorial sites of nerves and potential targets. An important aspect to the book is the inclusion of Botox injections, cryotherapy, and chemodenervation, which are all relatively unknown. Furthermore, a highlight to the book is the literature review on efficacy and adverse events for the interventions. Surgical interventions with outcomes and complications are listed. Finally, the algorithms at the end are a perfect visual step-by-step guide for practitioners
Assessment: This is a valuable resource for residents and practitioners. There are two other books on the market that deal with trigeminal neuralgia, but they were published less recently. Striking Back: The Trigeminal Neuralgia, 4th edition, Weigel and Casey (Trigeminal Neuralgia Association) was published in 2004 and Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Complete Guide Book, Rymore (IMB Publishing) was published in 2014. This is a great resource for updated interventions and experimental techniques that are available for treatment in trigeminal nerve pain.
