Truth or Beard by Penny Reid

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.

His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.

Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?

This book started off.......not very well. This is my first book by the author Penny Reid so I wasn't sure what to expect going in. Jessica believed she was in love with Beau. She had little to no interactions with Beau which made me feel she was a bit fickle. Jessica had tunnel vision when it came to Beau. He could do no wrong in her eyes. I sort of get the gist of where she was coming from in that we can build up this idea of a person and once we truly get to know them.....our expectations were off. That's not to say Beau is a bad guy, because he isn't. He just wasn't the one for Jessica. First off, I loved having a book where the main character had the same name as me. You would think with a name as common as Jessica that this would happen all the time but it doesn't. I think because the name is so common, authors tend to stray from using it. The problem was, I didn't like Jessica so much. She thought she was in love with Beau and then all of a sudden Duane is there and then she's in love with Duane. I felt she was bouncing all over the place. I feel like Jessica needed to regroup after her realization about Beau and take a breath before diving into another guy, especially his twin brother. I will say I adored Duane. He was this old fashioned guy who wanted to treat a girl respectably and do the right thing by everyone. Duane has had a crush on Jessica since they were teenagers. The problem was, Jessica only had eyes for Beau. I can't imagine being so into someone only to realize they only have feelings for your twin brother. OUCH. After some trickery, he did get on Jessica's radar. From there the ball started rolling. I loved the family aspect in this book. We may not always love the choices and decisions our family members make but we still stick by them no matter what. I loved this crazy Winston family with their 500 siblings. Okay, it was 7 but still....that's quite a large family. I adored getting to know each of the siblings and seeing each of their personalities. They are certainly a quirky bunch and I love each of them!! I can't wait to continue this series and learn more about each of them as individuals. On the down side, I had some issues with the writing. The author had words scattered throughout the book that I felt alienated the average reader. I'm by no means an English scholar and my vocabulary isn't the best but I feel I'm on par with the average person. Several times I had to stop reading and look up the meaning of words. This made it difficult to keep with my reading vibe having to stop and search for the definition of words continuously. Certain words like: laconic, magnanimity, acquiesced, modicum, dichotomously, minutiae, lissome, etc. were used when I feel we could've just used a more average word. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy learning new words and definitions to expand my vocabulary but the words popped up a bit too frequently for my taste. Overall, I enjoyed the love story between Duane and Jessica. It wasn't picture perfect by any means but I still swooned over it. The book did take awhile to get going in my opinion. I'd say it took until about 50% into the book for me to really become invested in the story. I'm giving this story a 3.5-3.75 and rounding up to a 4 star rating. I will continue this series and think I will enjoy it more with different characters highlighted.

I confess, I've owned this book since it first was published. I was going to wait until all of the Winston brothers were released. Then today, I realized how much I missed reading Penny's books and decided it was time to read this one. Totally worth every second!!! I can't wait to read the next one! ?

4.5 stars — Yay!!! Looks like this series might be a hit for me!! I can’t tell you how excited that makes me, b/c so many of my friends LOVE Ms. Reid, and I’ve enjoyed her books, but with fairly strong caveats. So it’s really relieving to be able to say that Grin & Beard It wasn’t an outlier, maybe I was just waiting for the Winston’s all along!! Jessica was perfectly odd and adorable…very quirky, but not unrelatably quirky, you know? She made me laugh with her wicked and ironic sense of humour (and I now understand my friend Jooood’s choice to dress up as Gandalf when she first met Ms. Reid). I did have a harder time relating to her wanderlust, and her stubborn assertion to not have personal attachments to people holding her back… I’m wondering if that was just her being young and assuming that that’s the way it would need to be in order to fulfill her dreams, you know? But I guess I can say I’m not a person with wanderlust, and so I found myself reaching trying to make a connection with Jessica on that…trying to figure out where it came from, what inspired it, etc. Might have just been me though. I loved her relationships with her family, especially her brother, b/c you could feel the underlying love, but it was covered in wanting to annoy the crap out of each other…I could relate a bit. I was surprised that one mystery wasn’t resolved in the book, even though it was heavily hinted at…but I can’t say anything without spoiling. Maybe it will come into play in another book in the series? Duane was both adorable and frustrating…seriously, I’ll end up saying this a million different ways. He was almost high and mighty with Jess a bit too much, and I can’t always get down with a high handed hero. He made decisions for her instead of asking her…but I do understand that was a flaw of his. I just don’t know if he learned from it, you know? At least maybe not enough to satisfy me. There were plenty of times where I both loved him and he irked me; where he made me swoon and he made me want to smack him at the same time. I thought he was so misunderstood, and sweet and sensitive, and when it came to the way he loved Jessica, oh wow…just *sigh* I also really appreciated how deeply he cared for his family, and how important they were to him. And together they were just awesomesauce. I loved how they got lost in each other…their chemistry was amazing. And there were so many hilarious moments sprinkled in, those always make these romances feel very real. I mean, the car makeout scene killed me. Their relationship progressed in a fairly predictable manner wrt conflict I could see coming a mile away, but I was OK with that. I also absolutely adored all the scenes with more than one Winston. The way the brothers interacted, the way Jess interacted with the brothers, it was all just good stuff. I also loved Claire, and am intrigued about her story. What I found funny is that every fan I know loves Cletus, and while I do think he’s hilarious, I’m not swooning or anything. I can’t help but wonder if he’s on the Asperger’s spectrum…either that or I worry he’s a sociopath. I will say this, reading this series out of order is a mistake. If you feel like you’re going to read the whole series, and not just a particular book, I suggest reading it starting at Ashley’s book (Beauty and the Mustache from the KITC series) and then in order from this book on. I haven’t read Ashley’s book, and I felt like my experience would have

5 Whisper My Name Stars! So I know I say this about all of Penny Reid's books but this one is my favorite! I floved Truth or Beard something fierce. I was so excited about getting more of the Winston brothers but this book, this book gave me so much more! I had butterflies for most of the book! Butterflies! The Winston brothers are a fun rowdy group. They are good people. They have big hearts and are loyal to a fault. Duane is no exception. He's a balls to the wall, fearless teddy bear. “My priority is making sure all your dreams come true. You can trust me on that.” I would love to be on the receiving end of one of his hot looks. Better yet, his laser focus. I can honestly say I have never wanted to hear a man whisper my name until now. Truth or Beard is full of surprises. I can't tell you what they are because hello, they're surprises! I will say though, I wasn't expecting Cletus to be so funny. Overall Penny Reid continues to be a facial hair ninja writing rockstar. I am SO looking forward to more in this series.

This was a cute book! I think my favorite character was Cletus even though he is a side character in the story. The story is engaging, funny, thought provoking but purely entertaining. This is a central theme for Penny Reid. She writes funny but thoughtful books. You often have to look things up because it is so smartly written that it throws you off and you end up actually learning something useful that you wouldn't have expected. The characters are well balanced, easy to empathize with and get attached to as much as you can get attached to a fictional character. The audio is also equally great! The narrators are fantastic and truly bring the book to a whole other dimension. The second "read" of this was via audio for me and it was almost like reading it for the first time all over again.

This was a really fun and steamy read that I couldn't help but adore! I don't read a lot of contemporary romance although after loving this one so much I think that I really should. This author (and series) jumped on to my TBR list when a bunch of romance bloggers that I trust were raving about this series. I couldn't resist downloading a copy of this book when it was available for free on Amazon and rather than waiting for months to read it, I jumped right in. I'm so glad that I didn't wait as this book was just a really great read. Not only was there a really steamy romance developing between Duane and Jessica but there was also some laugh out loud moments in this book. I love a romance that makes me laugh as well. Jessica was hilarious to me and she would say the most inappropriate things off the top of her head at the worst times. It was really great and was an unexpected surprise. One of the things that I also enjoyed about this book was the conflict on how Jessica and Duane's relationship would work out. Jessica has always wanted to travel the world and has been planning on leaving town as soon as she has enough money saved. Duane on the other hand is more tied down to the area as he owns a car garage with his brothers. They both seemingly wanted different things out of life so it was interesting to me to see how the author was going to make it all work. I liked that there was also the added problems that Duane had with a local biker gang. It added a little bit of tension especially to the end of the book which had me reading faster to see how it would all work out. I loved the way that the author ended this book. I can't say more than that without spoiling anything but I do want to mention that I found the ending to be really great! Overall, this was a really great romance- one of the best that I have read in awhile! I am so excited to read more books by this author (and get to know Duane's other brothers). I hope that the other books are just as humorous as I found this book to be! I'm now thinking that I need to find some more contemporary romance recommendations to try out thanks to this book. What other great authors am I missing out on? I can easily recommend this book to fellow romance readers! Bottom Line: A really great romance- both steamy and fun! Disclosure: I downloaded a copy of this book for free from Amazon.

I enjoyed this story, but I've found that some of the other brothers intrigue me more. Guess I'll have to keep reading, but I do appreciate the humor while in wait for them to be published.

There should be a disclaimer for books with whiney 22 year old heroines. This book was a struggle to finish and I skipped through parts. The plot is inconsistent, tge characters 1-dimensional. The sub plots are ill-developed and I found myself wishing the bikers would off the hero just to add some complexity.
