The Earl of Stanhope—the most notorious philanderer in all of England—has done the unthinkable. Fallen in love with his own wife...

After a traumatic illness robs her of her looks, Rose Davenport has little expectation of making a good marriage—until her feckless father, Miles, unexpectedly brokers a dazzling match for her with the heir to the Earl of Stanhope. Unfortunately, the marriage doesn’t live up to her hopes. Instead of the kindly bridegroom she’s expecting, Rose gets a sullen young husband who can barely stand to look at her.

Gil Truman is in love with the beautiful Tilly when his father informs him that he must instead marry plain, sickly Rose. Forced to agree to the marriage to recover the family fortune his father lost to Miles Davenport in a game of cards, Gil is bitter and heartbroken. Their wretched wedding trip ends with him abandoning Rose at his remote Northumbrian estate, intending never to return.

After five years of exile, Rose loses patience and travels to London to make a bid at seducing her errant, faithless husband. But their first encounter at a masked ball changes everything. When Rose learns the secret truth of how Gil was blackmailed into their marriage, her appetite for revenge dissolves. It’s too late to turn back, though. Their night of passion has had consequences that force Rose to confront Gil again.

Gil’s discovery that the lovely, masked stranger he fell for is none other than his own wife, leaves him feeling sick and betrayed. As for Rose, she has deep wounds of her own from years of Gil’s neglect. With such unpromising beginnings, can Rose and Gil make any kind of life together? Or are some wrongs too painful to ever be forgiven?

Romance novels always end happily, but the road the characters take to reach "happily ever after" varies a lot. I liked the story line. The story was a bit darker, the characters more complex and the sex scenes actually were a part of the story....not just rote and formulaic, stuck in because sex sells. If you're a fan of Elizabeth Hoyt, Sherry Thomas or Cheryl Sawyer, give this book a try. A new author for me, will definitely try others.

I really don't like stories with the setting of the old days but this story is magnificent. The writer has a great fluidity to her story. Nothing seemed randomly included and everything had its place. I loved how the steamy scenes blended with the story and it's lines. Most stories just have 2 characters with lust and the scenes just pop but Gil and Rose are just another level. I love being able to see their relationship grow. If there was anything I didn't like it would be the ending; it felt a bit rushed and I believe it could've been better.

I cannot remember when I've read a more wonderful book!  A few typos, but not enough to complain about.  This story is so moving; I smiled, fell in love, cried, and anguished over this couple.  This is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be the last.  Don't let this one pass you by!

Loved this story! I will definitely read more of Joanna Chambers' books! The story flowed smoothly and the love scenes were very well done and not just thrown in because sex sells books today. Rose and Gil felt very real to me and their story stresses how important real, honest communication is in relationships (even if you don't know how to say how you're feeling). Read this book in two sittings because I couldn't put it down!

I had never read a novel by Ms. Chambers, but after reading the reviews decided to give 'Unforgivable' a chance. I'm so very glad I did! Rose is so relatable, and the reader really wants to strangle Gil for the heartache he puts her through. There are times when Rose seems more 21st Century than 19th, but the book is so well written that her actions and words are fitting for the scene. I dubbed Rose the "ugly duckling", for those who want more of what the book is about. Ms. Chambers is on my radar for future novel purchases!

Great book, loved the story about Gil and Rose, wished the book had continued on with their life, Cried a few times and there were a few parts where I got peeved with them also, wanted to put them both in a corner until they came to their senses. The love scenes are not hot & steamy but to me they flowed with the story and yes he did leave her in the country for 5 years but during that time, men were allowed to do what they wanted with their wives and their families without input from them. Looking forward to reading more of the author's work.

At times it dragged. There was no epilogue. The book would probably been better if it was shorter...at times it really dragged and I lost interest. I felt like the chemistry between them was very lacking. There were no hot passionate scenes that drew you in.. let's just say there love scenes were lacking for me couse of the lack of chemistry. And I can't stand a women so easy to forgive for leaving her for 5 years. Then just jumps in bed with him knowing he doesn't even recognize his own wife he meets at a ball and then takes her home to sleep with him..really. I would be pissed. Not to mention she knows he is and was sleeping with half the ton in there 5 year marriage. Usually I love story's like these but this was just not that good.

This book was simply wonderful. It has emotion, drama and stubburn love most of all. The best kind. I could not put it down. On my historical romance top list.

I have found if I don't like the hero and heroine, I won't like the book. I finished the book but was not inspired to seek further books from this author.

Excellent! This novel has one of the best story lines I have read in a very long time and it is exceptionally well written. It is a deeply moving story that I could barely put down once I started reading it. This is a book I will save for future reading pleasure again. The only problem I had with it was an infrequent distasteful use of a few four letter words that did nothing to add to the story.

I enjoyed reading the story if Gil & Rose. An unexpected situation forces them to marry, and then the terrible Gil leaves her 300 miles away, she's young, sickly & very hurt. He then becomes a man about the town- no shame, and making news worthy affairs a regular mention in papers that even Rose sees. She is brave enough to go after him and the story takes off! Rose truely blossoms, and Gil gets it! Well written, almost 600 pages, and budget friendly under $5. Will look for more from this author. G
