Unwanted by Jennifer Estep

The New York Times bestselling Elemental Assassin series continues with a new e-novella—from the point of view of Finnegan Lane, the foster brother of Gin Blanco, and a fan favorite of readers of the series.

The fallout from his disastrous “family reunion” in Bitter Bite has left Finn feeling hurt, angry, and depressed. He can barely stand to look at himself in the mirror, much less eat any of the delicious barbecue from Gin’s famed Pork Pit restaurant.

But when the funeral for a slain security guard at his bank turns into a showdown with some nasty underworld giants, Finn knows that he must act in order to protect an innocent family.

Finnegan Lane might be the most unwanted man in Ashland these days, but he’s determined to try to make amends for his past mistakes...

Having read the whole series I am a big fan. This short story seems to deviate with Finn wallowing in self pity a bit much. It did get a story out, but was disappointing.

To say that I am a huge fan of the Elemental Assassin Series could be an understatement. I have all the books in the series in both e- and paperback format. It's actually one of the few series that I allow on my physical book shelf. I have also read all the free shorts available on the the author's website. This isn't the first story told from Finnegan Lane's point of view, but the other was told by teenage Finn. This book follows the events Bitter Bite, where Finn's mother returned to Ashland and surprised him and everyone else with her "resurrection". If you didn't read that book, you really want to wait on this one until after you read it. Because basically this is Finn's reaction and semi-redemption from the end of that book. I adored getting to sneak a peak into Finn's head, and see Gin from his perspective. Plus, even though this was a novella, there was still plenty of action to be had, just a lot less elemental magic being used. I had a wonderful time with this novella and gave it 4 stars. Simon & Schuster and Netgalley provided me with this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is an add-on novella to the Elemental Assassin series, part 14.5. It focuses solely on The Spider’s stepbrother Finn. Finnegan tends to play a solid but smaller role in the series, so it was nice to see Finnegan have his own time in the spotlight. Gin is such a strong character that the others often tend to sink into obscurity. Still reeling from the betrayal in Bitter Bite (Elemental Assassin #14), Finn is finding it hard to spend time with anyone. He feels as if he has let everyone down, and in doing so he has caused the deaths of many good people. He has blood on his hands. His boss seems to want to prolong his suffering by insisting that Finn be at every single funeral for each person killed in the raid. Being confronted with so much hatred is enough to drive anyone to desperation. Finn finds himself dragged into an unexpected situation, which he has to or rather wants to solve by himself. It will be interesting to see whether the events of Bitter Bite change the way Finn interacts with his friends and family in the future. Will this make him just a little bit harder and a lot more cynical? It’s short and sweet, but with Estep’s usual flair for memorable characters and strong story-lines. I received a copy of this book Via NetGalley

Unwanted is book 14.5 in the Elemental Assassin series, this is a novella told in the POV of Finn. After the events of the previous book in the series, I was wondering how Finn would be coping with everything. His mom who he thought was dead his whole life breezes in and plays the perfect part of the caring mother. Then it all goes down the drain and his fantasy is shattered in horrible ways. So in this installment, Finn is dealing with tension at his work and how the families are dealing with their deceased after the attack. It's an emotional read and I felt so bad for Finn since he's beating himself up over it all and no one seems to understand it wasn't his fault. Unwanted is an emotional novella that gives you more depth on one of my favorite characters. It's quick and tugged at my heartstrings. I really enjoy Finn's character, he's normally light and carefree all while being suave so it was a bit hard to see him like this but it's fully understandable why if you're up-to-date with the series. While you don't have to read this installment to fully understand the series, this novella opens up a little bit about an important character. If you enjoy the Elemental Assassin series, I suggest you pick this novella up!

Finnegan Lane like you've never seen him... full of doubt and self-loathing. What's it going to take to get Finn's cocky confidence and charm back after being so horribly betrayed by his long-lost mother? Taking down an Ashland baddie and saving an innocent family might do for a start. What drew me to this book: Oooh, twist my arm ! Frequent readers will know that I LOVE the Elemental Assassin series. Love, Love LOVE! Why I kept reading: It's a little painful that, for the very first book from Finn's perspective, he's not his usual over-confident, cocky, charming self. Finn is still reeling from the events of Bitter Bite, where the mother he long-thought was dead used and tortured him to gain access to the vault at the massive bank where Finn works. Guilt and self-loathing plague Finn's every waking moment. Even Gin and Bria's attempts to cheer him up don't work. Finn's boss seems to be doing everything in his power to make Finn suffer more—forcing him to go to the funeral services and memorials of the men who were killed during his mother's heist. Finn does it, too, and faces the scorn and hatred of his co-workers every day, feeling he deserves every bit of it. When Finn discovers one of the widows of a slain security guard is in trouble with an Ashland bookie, he decided he has to help, even against the widow's wishes. Finn attacks the problem, Gin Blanco-style, and starts his journey back to himself. Why I recommend it: There are a lot of feels in this book—for Finn, for the family of those who died, for Gin and Bria. If you are invested in these characters, you'll want to experience this part of their lives with them. I very much enjoy when the reader gets to see the consequences of actions that have taken place in a previous book, which is what this novella is all about. Bitter Bite was an amazing book, and this is the perfect follow-up. Also, the twist at the end is awesome and so perfectly fits the style of this series. I wasn't expecting it at all, and it was super!

I love this series, so this added bonus of Finn's follow-up story was appreciated. He seems to be growing in a positive way. Enjoyed this read.

After reading Bitter Bite I had a lot of anger toward Finn. I won't give any spoilers in case you haven't read Bitter Bite yet but Finn does things in the book that hurts his family and friends and made me not like him much. And even though Gin and the rest had forgiven him, I hadn't. I'm really glad I got an advanced readers copy of Unwanted to read before I moved on to Unraveled the next full book in the Elemental Assassin series. This is a short story that takes place in between Bitter Bite and Unraveled and is Finn's story. Finn is feeling very ashamed and depressed over the mistakes he made in Bitter Bite, over the pain and deaths that were, although unintention, still his fault. When Finn sees a chance to make up for some of that by helping the widow of a coworker that was killed he jumps at it. Without any help from Gin or his other family and friends he decides to deal with a very bad giant all on his own regardless of the fact that he could easily be killed. I'm glad I read this one before moving on to Unraveled because this story allowed me to forgive Finn and be ready to move on to the next story. I got this as an advanced readers copy through Netgalley and the publisher for an honest review.

DO NOT read this book before you read Bitter Bite since it would be a total spoiler. Who doesn’t love Finn?!?! This novella takes place after the events in Bitter Bite. Finn is devastated… he has loss so much and doesn’t know how to make it right again. He has his boss on his back, he has to attend the funerals of his friends, he wonders about his mother and how to move forward and pick up the pieces again. Surprise a package arrives that allows him to take his friends and sister, Gin Blanco on a vacation over the holidays, just what they all needed. Right? If you have read any of the other stories, it is not a surprise when this vacation is no picnic. They are setup in another trap and the “Spider” has to save the day. Of course she needs the help of all her friends. Jennifer Estep has the ability to transport you into the “Spider” world. This allowed you to get a deeper view of Finn and how he sees the world. You will not be disappointed, but first read Bitter Bite, this story contains many spoilers.

3.75 stars NOTE: If you have not read BITTER BITE, there may be some spoilers in my review. REVIEW: UNWANTED is a novella by Jennifer Estep that focuses on the aftermath and fallout from the events of BITTER BITE (Elemental Assassin #14) wherein Finnegan Lane’s past comes back from the dead seeking retribution, leaving a path of destruction and death in its wake. Told from first person point of view (Finnegan Lane) UNWANTED follows Finnegan and his growing guilt in the days and weeks after several co-workers were murdered doing their job. Although not directly responsible for the massacre and ensuing death, Finn compounds his grief and guilt with each funeral having to face the employees and their family knowing most of them place the blame squarely on his shoulders. When a threat of a different nature touches upon one of the survivors, Finn makes it his responsibility to mete out justice, ending the threat-once and for all. UNWANTED takes a quick look at the man we have grown to love. Although we still know very little about Finnegan’s life with Fletcher Lane, UNWANTED reveals some of the thought processes and his need to defend those who are unable to defend themselves. The premise helps to close up some lose ends in the aftermath of a dark and dangerous time; the characters are an eclectic mix of good and bad.
