New York Times bestselling author Mary McNear introduces us to Butternut Lake and the unforgettable people who call it home

It’s summer, and Allie Beckett has returned to her family’s cabin beside tranquil Butternut Lake, where as a teenager she spent so many carefree days. She’s promised her five-year-old son, Wyatt, they will be happy there. She’s promised herself this is the place to begin again after her husband’s death in Afghanistan. The cabin holds wonderful memories, but from the moment she crosses its threshold, Allie is seized with doubts. Has she done the right thing uprooting her little boy from the only home he’s ever known?

Allie and her son are embraced by the townsfolk, and her reunions with old friends are joyous ones. And then there are newcomers like Walker Ford, who mostly keeps to himself—until he takes a shine to Wyatt...and to Allie.

Everyone knows that moving forward is never easy, and as the long, lazy days of summer take hold, Allie must learn to unlock the hidden longings of her heart and to accept that in order to face the future she must also confront—and understand—what has come before.

I was drawn to this book because it seemed like it would be a touching story and I was not disappointed. The author did a good job with the character development and the emotions of them showed through with her writing. Also the story line itself was so believable and could happen to anyone which was another plus in my book. Since the writing in this story flowed so well I did not want to put it down. I will absolutely be reading the rest of the trilogy. For lovers of a great fiction book this is for you.

I was in Barns and Nobles looking for a new book and the front cover just caught my attention, After reading that back to see what it was all about I sat down and started to read. Next thing I know I'm on chapter four. I loved the flow of this book and could not put it down. Great book!

This is one of those books where the pages just melted away! There isn't a character in this novel I didn't love. With every page I read I became more attached to everyone in this little town of Butternut. I mean, Allie has moved to a cabin in the woods--on a lake, dream location! I couldn't help, but feel empathy for Allie. She is a young widow with a small child. She has run from their home in the suburbs, because she wanted to spend her days living in her grief. She wanted to get away from people pushing her to move forward, but what happens when she gets to Butternut is she begins moving forward--but maybe quicker than she is ready for. I honestly don't think I could have enjoyed a book more. I loved everything about it. The undertone was comforting and welcoming. The characters-perfect with all their flaws. Emotions were plentiful! I found myself smiling and then suddenly tears would be falling...Up At Butternut Lake ring true. People dealing with their pasts, trying to move forward. A novel of love of family, family not by blood, but by choice. I didn't want to leave Butternut, these characters. I want to go back and see them again and continue to watch their stories. This book will stay with me for awhile. Highly highly recommending!

There's just something about being at the lake….  This novel draws the reader in from the opening page.  The characters are wonderful and believable and the imagery is so real.  i was able to close my eyes and feel like I was at the lake.  Definitely a page turner- I can't wait for number 2!

Fun summer reading, total chic lit. Fun if you happen to live in the midwest and enjoy reading about locations with which you are familiar (although the town is fictional). Yes, it is unrealistic. Yes, the drama is soap operish. No, it is not a true literary gem. What it is is a great summer beach read and I will likely read the second book when it is released.

If your just looking for a touching romantic read this book will do it. No surprises....nothing overly original, just a good read.

Enjoyable, easy read. Like most books in the roman genre, it was predictable but the characters were well developed. Enjoyed that the book was more about the residents of Butternut Lake rather than just one couple. Some steamy scenes but nothing too explicit or offensive. No foul language. Well edited. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

This story was relatable and took me out of my daily life- just what I needed. Felt like a vacation to Butternut, and like I knew everyone in the story. Well written, flew through it, and will be looking out for other stories from this author.  Some romance, some friendship, and some real life scenarios that are hard to find sometimes.  Loved it!!

Check out the full review Kritters Ramblings Allie is a young mother who has been widowed due to war and is trying to make a new home for her and her son without the memories that linger in their previous hometown.  She returns to a lake house from her childhood where there are a few people who knew her before this most recent tragedy in her life.   The minor characters had a story of their own which added to the story, but didn't distract.  The owner of the local diner is a recent empty nester and is really feeling the loneliness without her daughter at home.  Jax is a mom of three with the fourth on the way and has kept a secret from her husband and she must confront this to move her marriage forward.  I enjoyed having these full stories settle within Allie's story.

I am a huge Sarah Addison Allen fan. That being said, I love when we get different perspectives in a book to tell a story that weaves together. Just like Allen, McNear manages to tell the story of a small town with lovely people who need each other. They need time, friendship, forgiveness, and love. Butternut lake is one I would love to visit and the town is one I dream of calling home. I would def recommended Up at Butternut Lake as a summer beach read, for those who want small town romances, and those who want a story with heart. A whole lot of heart! I can't wait to read the next book!!

This book was very boring. But I do appreciate the author not including the details of the sexual acts. So with that said, it was a clean book but just nothing interesting to it.
