About the Author

Growing up in a Jewish family during the depression, Joe experienced first wealth and then poverty. Looking for a way out for his factory working single mother, he joined the military and served in Korean War, barely missing becoming a casualty of the Chosin Reservoir tragedy. After the war he went back to school on the GI Bill and became an urban planner serving in many city and state government positions. Joe had a hand in planning the new Department of Community Affairs which was established in the state government of New Jersey in 1967 and which Joe counts among his proudest achievements. After retiring, Joe continued to work in public service, volunteering for many missions with FEMA over a 20 year period and also working with NGO's to spread American practices of good governance and democratic principles, to countries emerging from communism. With his wife Dorothy of now almost 64 years, he started a family, had four children and now has 7 grandchildren and feels blessed that he was ever able to start one after escaping only by a quirk of fate the sad destiny of many soldiers during wartime.
