Description: This brief overview of the basics of diagnostic imaging of nontraditional species covers a wide variety of species and topics.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a coherent, integrated, and practical clinical reference of diagnostic imaging examples of commonly seen injuries and diseases that can afflict birds and exotics. This is a worthy objective, but due to the lack of references for further in-depth understanding, the book comes across as more of an anecdotal reference than a true scientific reference. However, with its numerous examples of common abnormalities, it can be a valuable adjunct reference in a clinical setting.
Audience: The intended audience is large and diverse, ranging from general practitioners to physical anthropologists. Veterinarians with a strong interest in exotics would be slightly disappointed in the anecdotal nature of this book.
Features: The book covers the avian species quite well, devoting a section to each body division. The inclusion of basic information about normal physiology and common injuries is helpful. The last third of the book is devoted to mammals and reptiles, and contains multiple reproduced radiographic images and information. Reproduction of radiographic images is difficult and most of the images are adequate, but in a book whose purpose is to convey diagnosis through imaging, some of the images are unacceptable, either due to poor initial image or poor reproduction.
Assessment: This book certainly fills some of the void in diagnostic imaging, providing a one-stop-shop for information on nontraditional species. Unfortunately, it takes a more anecdotal than scientific approach. The author provides a vast amount of information in this book, but leaves it open to interpretation due to lack of solid references.
