Victoria

Generally recognized as one of Hamsun's greatest works, Victoria was originally published in 1898. The novel, a seemingly simple love idyll, is imbued with a passionate lyricism and that brooding melancholy that appears in so much of Hamsun's writing. The star-crossed lovers, Johannes, the miller's son, and Victoria, the daughter of the lord of the manor, prove, in their love, perversely cruel to each other and end up in the inevitable tragedy.
