I know some of these fine folks in this book, and Brett captures them beautifully. The thing that he can see that others can't is the motivation to own these fabulous bits of music. Brett's empathy and enthusiasm really shine through (especially when Monoman gets involved). It would be easier to dismiss record collecters as weirdos hung up on their teenage fantasies (like comic book collectors often get labeled), but this book is a nice reminder that in the age of the digital download, mono first pressings really do sound better.

I don't know how Milano found some of these folks -- they range from the fairly normal music-loving (like me) to the truly far out. But this book weaves them all together in a breezy, often very funny narrative that is a joy to read. The author obviously cares for these people and understands their vinyl addiction -- but even those of us who are not similarly afflicted can enjoy this wild, fun peek into a subculture.
