Overview

Violet Cove by Ann Reillet

After months of searching for a house along Oregon's rocky coastline, a Portland couple decides to buy an old Victorian mansion. Once a charming estate, the house is now dilapidated and requires much work. Determined, they set off to make it their dream home, but old houses are not always as charming as they seem. When the new owners begin to piece together the terrible history that occurred within their home, it sets off a chain reaction that leads to a double homicide, but not all the suspects are of the living!

Ann Reillet's writing is freshly entertaining. She leaps across social boundaries to create likable characters that would otherwise be taboo. In her novel, Violet Cove, she successfully intertwines a ghost story and murder mystery. Although I can usually form a suspicion about the guilty character, I was truly surprised by the denouement here and realized only afterward that the clues were there all along; staring me in the face. Violet Cove is best suited to an adult audience; anyone who enjoys murder mysteries, ghost stories, or paranormal fiction will delight in this novel. And once you've read Violet Cove, you're going to want more from this talented author.

Ann Reillet is my new favorite author. I can't believe this is her first novel. According to her biography, she's a former bank executive and goodwill ambassador... Well, she's found her calling. This book was so amazing, an absolute toss up between a ghost story and murder mystery. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries, suspense, horror, or drama.

If you want to read a good murder mystery/ghost story, this is it. Ann Reillet's unique writing style is a breathe of fresh air. Her ability to draw you into the story, make you care about the characters, and keep you interested is on a level with well-known, best selling novelists. A little comedy, love, murder, mystery, ghosts. What more do you need in a one book? The ending alone is enough to make me want to read it again and when you read it and get to the last word, you'll say exactly what I said, "Wow, I didn't see that coming." Awesome book! I'm glad to have it in my personal library.
