Voices from the Other Side: Inspiring German WWII Memoirs by Jean Goodwin Messinger is an incredible collection of stories from all sorts of people who, while not directly involved in fighting the war, certainly was affected by it. Reading these stories, I can away with two primary thoughts. One, how fortunate we are to have lived such a peaceful life here in the States. Second, in how naïve we are to the suffering of others throughout the world and history. It is hard to imagine living the life these people had during the war and afterwards. The hardships and struggles are beyond anything I would want to endure. The closest thing to come to it would be the great depression, but unfortunately, most of those survivors have died out leaving us with just a few to remind us of how well we have it. An emotional and poignant read that serves as an excellent insight into the cost of war. Well written, this is a great book that shows a side of humanity that is lost in todays world. This is one that I highly recommend.
