About the Author

W.E.B. Du Bois (William Edward Burghardt Du Bois) (1868–1963), a leader in the struggle for Black rights in the United States, was a founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. A selection of his writings and speeches from 1890 to 1963 can be found in the two-volume collection W.E.B. Du Bois Speaks (1970).
