We, The Fortress: A Healing Journey from Dissociative Identity Disorder
One body...many minds. This is how we can best describe ourselves today. This strange set of circumstances was not always the case for us. We were once a "one body-one mind" person, even though this entity was only a tiny and hungry baby who first breathed life with a potential for happiness she never got to have. It wasn't her choice, just as being a collection of separate minds now is not ours.

In these passages, we outline what healing from dissociative identity disorder looks like. We can share this with clarity BECAUSE WE WROTE IT ALL DOWN AS IT WAS HAPPENING. We learned early in this life to put pen to page to document our thoughts, feelings, setbacks, and triumphs in real time. It is our choice to share these things with you.

There are many hugely sad things in these passages but it is not our intent to dwell on them. Because we have survived to share what happened, it is not really sad but is evidence that we have triumphed over what could loosely be termed as "adversity". You can judge for yourself as to whether we successfully prevailed over our tragedies. We think we did.

About the Author

Dr. Christine Traxler is a Minnesota-based writer, author, and practicing physician in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. While this book has a single author's name, it was written by “the Fortress”—a ragtag collection of children, teens, and adults who inhabit a single physical body. After a decades-long and ongoing journey of healing from dissociative identity disorder, Dr. Traxler and the rest of the Fortress share their thoughts on their years of torment, self-hatred, and eventually self-love and commitment to a life of recovery and inner peace that is their collective experience today.
Dr. Traxler has practiced medicine since 1986 and specializes in family medicine. Because of her own history of psychological trauma, she often focuses her practice on identifying and managing the physical after-effects of trauma she sees in many of her patients. She has written dozens of medical study guides, a children’s book, and numerous college-level science books. She has proudly raised two daughters and cherishes two grandchildren.
