Isabella followed the drum. She met Captain Storm and fell in love. The problem is that she is keeping a secret that could destroy everything. Nate has loved Isabella since he met her, but did declare his love for her until the eve of battle. When he returned from the battle, she rejected him and went home. A couple of years later, they are both still mourning their loss when they see each other across a ballroom. Isabella will still not tell Nate her secret. She knows he will not want to ever see her again if she does. Or will he?
Knowing her family secret would never allow her a life of a wife and mother Isabella Valentine was determined that her life have a purpose. That is one reason she insisted on following and helping her doctor brother on the battlefield which was a satisfying life until the day he arrived in the hospital tent. Knowing he loved another and would never be hers Isabella worshiped the time they spent together until the day he was transferred to another fighting unit. Oh, but when he returns the feelings are stronger than ever. Nathaniel Storm has fallen in love with an angel on earth; but a war is no place to conduct a courtship. He must be content to spend as much time with her as he can until the call to battle is sounded; at least until the day he was transferred for punching a superior. A year later he finds himself back in the same camp and is determined not to waste another moment in making his intentions known. The series of events that follow Nathaniel’s declaration are heart wrenching and frustrating to both Isabella and Nathaniel. When their paths cross again will Nathaniel be able to put Isabella from his mind and heart once and for all? Will Isabella finally tell her shameful secret and will she survive Nathaniel’s reaction? The third in Jane Charles’ The Spirited Storms series (The first in the series - Christmas Spirits - can be found in the anthology The Duke’s Christmas Summons and is due out on it’s on July 1, 2016 while the second in the series – Ruined by a Lady – can be found in the anthology Evading the Duke) is as well written and entertaining as the first two. Even though it is part of a series it can be read as a stand-alone but don’t deprive yourself - grab them all!
I am fascinated by stories about soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars and how they coped with life after the war. This story does not disappoint, and we get the added benefit of seeing how women who followed the drum as nurses, officer's wives, and camp followers fared during the war. Isabella Valentine followed her brother, a doctor, to the war to act as a nurse. Often, she could do nothing more than read to the men, hold their hands, or write letters for them. Other times, she was called upon to help with medical procedures, and she fully experienced the horrors of war. Because of her scandalous family history, she thought she would never be able to have a husband and family of her own, so Isabella felt nursing was her way of contributing to make the world better. When one special patient, Capt. Nathaniel Storm, started to capture her heart, she knew she had to discourage him. Little did she know that Capt. Storm would not be so easily dissuaded. After two years of trying to forget Isabella, Nathaniel is back in London and determined to get some answers. Did she really never love him? What is the secret she is trying to hide? And why is the Duke of Danby sticking his match-making nose into his business? This novella features familiar characters from other Jane Charles stories including the many Valentine and Storm siblings and, of course, the Duke of Danby. I liked the more serious nature of this story and the veterans' issues brought to light that are still so important to us today.
