What Happened

  • This book is a snapshot of how I felt and what we knew in the spring and summer of 2017, just a few months after the 2016 election. As you’ll see, it is at times raw, bewildered, and angry. By the end, though, I found some peace. And I remain hopeful that our country is resilient enough to withstand even these challenging times.

The reception of the book was more positive and fervent than I expected. All over the country, people lined up for hours to tell me— often in tears—how much the book and our campaign meant to them. Hearing from them meant the world to me. Many book signings became part group-therapy session, part organizing rally. I was enchanted by the little girls who came to my events with their parents, some wearing tiny pantsuits and pearls, beaming up at me, so proud to tell me about their siblings, their teachers, and what they want to be when they grow up.

Since I wrote this book, some things have changed. Wounds heal. Emotions cool. History marches on. As it does, it reveals itself more fully. We’ve learned a lot more about what happened in 2016. It turns out the Russian misinformation campaign was even more insidious . . . the dirty tricks that Cambridge Analytica and others used on Facebook and elsewhere were even more devious . . . and the Republican voter suppression efforts were even more effective than we imagined. In a new afterword included in this edition, written in early summer 2018, I try to make sense of these new revelations and what they mean for our country going forward.

As more facts have come to light, I’ve gone back and reconsidered this book with fresh eyes. I believe it stands the test of time. The arguments I made about the factors that contributed to Trump’s election still hold up a year later. Meanwhile, my fears about the danger he poses to our country have only grown. And while Trump and his allies have continued to attack me at every opportunity, none of them has poked any real holes in this book, even about the whole email debacle. I hope that gives you confidence as you read on. And I hope that What Happened helps give you the courage to join the fights we face today. May you find it as cathartic to read as I found it to write.

Ignore the reviews of those who haven't read it that are in here. This book was released on 9/12 not 9/11 so that person did not read it. Brilliant insight into the behind the scenes of what was the most tumultuous election of my times. Clinton writes in ways that amuse and entertain you but also gives you real insight into how difficult this campaign really was. We watched it on tv and read about it in the papers, but it is a breath of fresh air to hear real accounts of what happened from someone who can recall it all and express it in a way that allows us all to understand and view what was beyond us at the time.

I actually read this book trying to find a way to like this person despite all that your read and hear about her. I mean, no one can be truly as bad as how they are depicted by the MSM, right? I wanted to feel bad for her as she truly portrayed herself as someone who cared about so many issues that face our country despite hearing she was in this race because she DESERVED to be President. I wanted so badly to find an ounce of humanity in her....Well, I didn't. After reading this book and trying to fairly give her a shot, I am at a loss. She took "cheap shots" at just about anyone she felt was a fair target. She truly depicts herself as better than others and her words drip with condescending tones, narcissism and an overall attitude of entitlement. Her choice of words and phrasing will leave one seeing that HRC truly thinks she is superior to those she was to serve. The fact that she refuses to look in the mirror and hold herself accountable should not shock anyone who reads this.

Well written by a Yale Law School graduate, former Secretary of State, First Lady, Senator and public servant since she was 19. Encouraging. Inspirational Most of these reviewers commented before the book was published on September 12, 2017. So, just ignore the haters In the past 9 months all of what Hillary tried to tell people throughout her campaign has been proven true. Trumps claims, vicious accusations and mad man antics.

Funny how Clinton haters respond to this. The book is historical perspective. She is polarizing. Good read.

Worth the read . Ignore the hateful remarks. She does take responsibility for her loss. I also agree with the assessment of coverage of the campaign. She will make you laugh and cry!

    Poignant darkly funny account.

This book is just a way for her to make millions more. Her attempt to make people feel bad for her loss almost sounds like a fight in divorce court for a child. She puts herself on a pedestal and is completely ignorant when it comes to possible flaws in her message or campaign.

I am a life long Democrat that in all good conscience could not vote for Hillary. She just can't relate to the average American citizen. I had hoped this book would have shown some incite into why she lost the election but it is just more of the same old, same old. She gave the election to Trump, with all her elitist ways. No idea what most America's wanted and needed. If you really want to read this book, borrow it from the library, don't waste your money.

I really wanted to hear it from her perspective and now I have. Sadly I feel she still might not 'get' what truly concerned and perplexed some of us who also love our country yet felt differently than she did about some issues after all. I'd love to have a chat...an exchange of perspectives...a potential path to mutual understanding. It is possible to agree to disagree and still move forward with respect for anothers difference of opinion. I'm glad I read the book but disappointed in the blame game written so voluminously in it's pages. I hope she finds complete peace that comes from within ones self entirely at some point...she has earned that. The deepest dissatisfaction we can find in life is living to have others like, accept or validate us.

A look behind the scenes of an election like no other. I found the sectiin on women particularly fascinating. Ultimately inspiratiinal look at a smart, thoughtful, deeply committed woman.

Well-written, informative, and in may ways ... painful. This is Hillary's story and she is allowed to tell it any way she wants to tell the story. The 2016 election was a nightmare for many reasons; Trump, Comey, Sanders, and those who have "hated" Hillary for more than 25 years. Bravo for the courage to tell her own version.

I really tried to appreciate Ms. Clinton's perspectives, but she just doesn't seem to understand the irony that her own self-centered ambitions are the same as Trump's, applied slightly differently. Her disregard of the sweeping national dissatisfaction with her, along with the trajectory of the US Federal Government (both parties) led to her defeat...not her long list of excuses. This book comes across as self-adulation, excuse-making, and personal agenda-pushing.

Apart from determining if the information in the book was legible or not, it seems very candid. A few things were interesting to know, and to realize how they changed the course of history.

Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign is a much better read, and probably closer to What "Really" Happened.

It s full of lies, excuses, and victim-card playing. This book i pure garbage, no matte if you are a liberal or a conservative.

She should have listened to her husband.....not good and almost a parody on honesty

    Not much substance

This is a boring whiny book that sounds like the author is still running for the presidency. She accepts zero fault and glosses over the scandals and problems of her life and her foundation. She picks and chooses President Trumps words out of context and belittles him every chance she gets. But she is the holy one. If you are a fan of hers maybe you will like the little insights into her life. But it is a tedious slog nontheless

I appreciated getting the inside story from the woman who lived it! Hillary is a very intelligent woman with at the very least the the abilities of President Bill Clinton. She had experience from all sides of the Presidency which is not usually the case of Presidential hopefulls and she had something else drive and passion to make our country and indeed the world a better place. It is horrifying to know how much influence a hostile foreign nation played in our election process and the terrible damage it has done to our country! It may be a long time down the road before fully realize how much damage has been done. Think how different our country would be if President Lincoln had never become president. No matter who you voted for you should NEVER want the interference that took place in the 2016 election to ever happen again! Set outside your like or dislike for Hillary Clinton and learn what you can from this book so we can stop foreign governments from ever becoming involved in our elections again!

Funny and extremely interesting to learn about her true feelings and behind-the-scenes accounts.
