When Duty Calls: A Handbook for Families Facing Military Separation by Carol Vandesteeg

In this unique and wonderfully thorough handbook, a military wife and mom shares practical advice about preparing and dealing with deployment of a loved one. Carol Vandesteeg helps families learn what to expect as they prepare for deployment, how to communicate while separated, helping children through the separation, and reuniting at the end of the tour of duty. When Duty Calls also addresses the subject that's so painful to face: the possibility that the loved one may not return.

This book was completely confusing. It is certainly one of the most poorly written books I have ever read. I could rarely relate to what the author was talking about, or even who she was talking TO. She goes from talking to wives, to the serviceman, to the children, to the parents and extended family. Trying to include everyone really hurts her as I think she could have been more helpful if she had focused on wives and provided information for only ONE of the many parties she addressed. The book also does not include much information, just references to information on websites or other books and documents. In my opinion if you are trying to learn about military life you should buy one of the many other books geared especailly towards military wives.

If you are facing a separation, this book has everything you need to prepare for and successfully live through an active duty separation. It has helpful hints for every possible eventuality, and is a must read for everyone who has a potential for a TDY away from family.
