When There Is No Doctor: Preventive and Emergency Healthcare in Uncertain Times by Gerard S. Doyle

The fifth title in Process’ Self-Reliance series demystifies medical practices with a practical approach to twenty-first-century health and home medicine, particularly helpful in a financial downturn.

When There Is No Doctor is smartly designed and full of medical tips and emergency suggestions. At a time when our health system has become particularly susceptible to strain, it should be no further than an arm’s reach away in your household.

This is a book about sustainable health, primarily having to do with your health and what you can do to protect it—in bad times certainly, but also in good. I will help you ensure the health of those you love, yourself and, should you so choose, your community, if and when the world changes. World may come to mean your little town or the whole globe. It could change for a few days or weeks, or for a few years. It could change because of a flood, financial crisis, flu pandemic, or failure of our energy procurement, production or distribution systems.

I will not teach you to be a lone survivalist who anticipates doing an appendectomy on himself or a loved one on the kitchen table with a steak knife and a few spoons, although I will discuss techniques of austere and improvised medicine for really hard times.

Gerard S. Doyle, MD, teaches and practices emergency medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he also plans the hospital’s response to disasters.

This book was recommended to me by a family member who knows that I am a middle aged mother and grandmother, FAR removed from wilderness adventures or fears of grid-crash. But I am really glad that I read this fascinating look at wellness and self care. Each and everyone of us has a responsibility to make good choices for wellness and quality of health for ourselves and our loved ones. This book looks at practical self care and first aid, especially in the moments when health care is not at hand. It makes you realize how much you already know about taking care, and opens up ideas for things you have at hand to use in an emergency. Although I am not as concerned about a post apocalyptic world, I did find the check lists for what a community needs medically or in the case of a catastrophe to be well thought out and universally applicable. And, as others have pointed out, I really did enjoy the section on caring for our pet animals! The writing style is easy to read, and the author's light touch keeps the pages turning. I found that I wanted to read it from cover to cover rather than seeing it as a reference book only. It will stay in my family room for casual readers from now on. If you are intersted in keeping your family well and thinking positively about good health this book is for you.

I really wanted to get into this book, as I have heard many good things about it and it's been recommended to me as well. From what I did read, it was all very informative and I was looking forward to delving into it and hone my skills. HOWEVER MY COPY (WITH THE BLUE COVER) IS MISSING 8 FULL PAGES!!!! I will be returning to my local store (originally purchased online) to see if the issue can be corrected. I have never had a brand new book that was missing pages. So as of now, I can't fully speak to the content of the book. I just wanted to warn others considering it, to keep the receipt and check their copy for any flaws or missing pages. Happy Reading.
