Whiskey Secrets by Carrie Ann Ryan

Sparks fly between a former cop-turned-bartender and his new innkeeper in the first installment of a Montgomery Ink spin-off series from NYT Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan.

Dare Collins is a man who knows his whiskey and women—or at least that’s what he tells himself. When his family decides to convert the apartments over his bar and tap house into an inn and hires on a new innkeeper, he’s more than reluctant. Especially when he meets the new hire. But he’ll soon find that he has no choice but to work with this city girl and accept her new ideas and the burning attraction between them.

Kenzie Owens left her old life and an abusive relationship behind her—or so she thought. She figures she’ll be safe in Whiskey, Pennsylvania but after one look at her new boss, Dare Collins, she might still be in danger, or at least her heart. And when her past catches up with her despite her attempts to avoid it, it’s more than her heart on the line. This time, it might mean her life.

I was excited to read this book (have read all of the Montgomery Ink books -multiple times- and couldn't wait to meet Tabby's brothers), but was a little disappointed. I'm all for the male lead to be human with issues to work thru, but really? Dare is soooo pitiful! He's all torn up because he killed a bad guy as a cop, and he doesn't blame his ex for keeping his kid away from him?!? What this character needed was some solid therapy and a good anti-depressant. On the other hand, loved the heroine, Kenzie! She also had issues, but didn't let them get in her way.

It took awhile to get into this book, the beginning was kind of slow. But as I read more, I really enjoyed the story of Dare and Kenzie (Red as he liked to call her). They both struggled with themselves not knowing if they wanted to go forward or stay away. I’m glad I kept going because I liked it the more I read. Can’t wait for the next one.

Carrie Ann Ryan starts my 2018 reading year with all the feels. Emotional, sweet, sensual with just the right amount of hotness to get you to your happy place. Kenzie and Dare are like two pea in a pod but with different issues from the past that plague their present. Kenzie is an amazingly strong woman. Issues that seem to always keep them both on their toes. Dare and Kenzie created sparks the moment they met. I loved that their connection was not only physical but very deep on the emotional side. They found a way to help each other deal and heal with past. Whiskey Secrets is a fantastic start to the Whiskey and Lies series. Kenzie and Dare are both well developed and yet complex at the same time. They connection they share and built is something of beauty. For a faster pace of the story we experience a lot of growth for Dare and Kenzie and potential development for future story. A copy of this title was provided for an honest review.

I liked Whiskey Secrets but it doesn't really stand out for me and I will admit my interest lagged a bit at the halfway point. However, I enjoyed the Collins' family and their closeness; it's clear this family relies on each other and takes care of each other. Set in the small town of Whiskey, each of the brothers seems to hold an important place in the town but overall we didn't really see much of the town outside of the Inn, bar, and restaurant. Kenzie and Dare jump into bed pretty quickly and I'm not completely sold on their instant lust and love. After all, Kenzie flinches from a touch on the shoulder by her female boss, but doesn't seem to struggle with Dare at all, with the exception of asking not to have her arms held. I really enjoyed Kenzie as a heroine and I can't help but admire the journey that she's been on. Like many women in the same situation, Kenzie didn't realize just how isolated and controlled she was by her husband until things came to a critical point. Now that Kenzie is away from her ex she's determined to find the person that she was before and relearn her passions. I enjoyed watching her make friends in Whiskey, find success and happiness in her work and eventually fall love with Dare. Kenzie is the epitome of a strong and compassionate woman who isn't afraid to put herself out there and learn from her past. Dare was also an enjoyable character, if a bit rough and grumpy at times. Him and Kenzie don't start off on the best foot but it's clear that Dare is not intentionally trying to be mean, he just has a lot on his mind and isn't used to losing control of anything. Although we don't see much change in Dare's personality I did enjoy watching him care for Kenzie as they grow closer. I also felt for Dare's custody situation and I wish that he wasn't always defending his ex, Monica, because her actions don't really make her seem like the nice person Dare keeps saying she is. Though I felt that things flowed pretty well and the story was interesting there were times where the writing felt a bit rote and mechanical. The sentences were all correct but sometimes it felt like they were missing the substance behind the words. This was my first book by Carrie Ann Ryan so I'm not sure if the writing style is indicative of the rest of her work or not. Even with a few problems, overall, I didn't mind the writing and for the most part it didn't detract from the story. I do plan to try out the Montgomery Ink series of which this book is a spin off for and I also plan to read the next one in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of the book. No surprise here, this was a helluva way to kick off this spinoff series! It had so many components that I love - a single dad, feisty heroine, great family element, small town setting, emotion, suspense, and heat. Dare and Kenzie were so lovable and the push and pull between them, added with the mystery and danger of Kenzie's past, made Whiskey Secrets a real page turner for me. Not only that, I CAN'T WAIT for the next two books in this series! 4.5 out of 5 wine glasses.

I've been wanting to try one of Carrie's books for a while now, and given the recent release of her newest series, Whiskey and Lies, I figured it was the perfect time to dive in. The result? Whiskey Secrets was indeed a great place to start. It was sweet, sexy, and even a tad bit twisty. Whiskey Secrets introduces Dare and Kenzie, and when they first meet flames fly rather than sparks. Dare is hesitant to let anyone new enter his family's business, no matter how pretty that someone might be. From the get-go, I liked Dare. He's headstrong, protective, and hardworking; however, underneath it all he is a huge sweetheart, especially when it comes to his son. When the book first begins, Dare is struggling to maintain normalcy as well as happiness. He struggles with his past as a cop as well as the lack of time he has with his son. It broke my heart to see him struggle with both issues. Kenzie, on the other hand, just wants to start her new job in peace without an arrogant albeit sexy bartender breathing down her neck. Kenzie has spent the past years weighed down by an abusive relationship, and now that she's in a new town she's hoping to find herself again. Kenzie was also incredibly likable. At first, she's closed-off - she's scared of making new friends, new relationships, new everything. I could understand that; however, as the book continues she starts to become comfortable in her own skin. Kenzie was always strong - much stronger than she gave herself credit for. It just took her time to realize it, and I loved seeing that transformation occur. The plot in Whiskey Secrets mainly revolves around Kenzie and Dare's romance as well as the ghosts from their respective pasts. The romance was equal parts steamy and sweet; however, there were times at which I wished there was more development. I felt that the enemies to friends to lovers transitions occurred at rapid speed. The ghosts from their pasts created a decent amount of tension and drama, and I thought Carrie did a great job of giving each a decent resolution. I also enjoyed the family dynamics in this. Dare's family was a rowdy bunch, and I can't wait to see his brothers discover their HEAs in the next two books. Romantic, emotional, and fast paced, Whiskey Secrets was a solid read from start to finish. I look forward to reading more in this series.

We first met the Collins' brothers in the Montgomery Ink series when their sister joined the 'Montgomery clan'. This is the first book about the 3 brothers and their family in the Whiskey and Lies series. I enjoyed the story although if you have read others by Carrie Ann Ryan you may find this one to be a slower paced read - more of a slow burn style. Nothing wrong with that - just be prepared! Both Dare and Kenzie are working through their own issues and they are both fairly major. But they can't deny their chemistry however will they make the decision to risk their hearts again and try for more... Really looking forward to the other brothers stories though! Was definitely intrigued.

A Great Way To Start A New Series Rating: 4.5 Stars Dare Collins is at his wits end. You will feel sorry for him because his life seems to be working against him. Kenzie Owens puts on a good front. But she seems comfortable enough around Dare to let him into her life. This is one great thing about our author. We get to see a whole family network along with the love and pain that sometimes occurs. They are people that you can periodically relate to. And when you add in children, they just seem to have a way of stealing a scene. And that’s another thing I like about this author. All her scenes seem to flow seamlessly from one to another. I never seem to get lost and have to go back and re-read a scene to see what I may have missed. Ms. Ryan also connects this series her popular Montgomery Ink. You may not have read that series but that’s ok because you won’t be lost if you haven’t. But if you want to see how it connects to this one you may at some point want to take a chance and see what that series is about. The author even helps you out by giving you the books that crossover. Kenzie is a woman that’s trying to recover from a past that tried to pull her down. This may be a trigger for those that have gone through domestic violence. It could also lift those up that have been able to escape and come out stronger and with a strong voice. It was also nice to see that she had a champion in her corner. This book may not be as long as some others that you have read but it is a story that will have you slow down. It’s one to sit back, relax, and have either a favorite snack or a favorite drink handy as you read. It was very easy to tune out everything else so that I could concentrate on the story that our author has written. I came to care for Kenzie and wanted to know that she ends up with a white knight even if he does have a little chink in his armor. The ending left me thinking and reminiscing about my own family and may do the same for you. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Welcome to Whiskey, PA. A new place, with familiar faces. It was nice to finally see more of Tabby's (from Ink Exposed) brothers. They crashed into Denver to protect their baby sister and made quite the impression on, apparently, more than just me. I've been patiently waiting for their stories, and Carrie Ann Ryan didn't disappoint. After being brought to tears by her dedication and acknowledgment, I settled in to catch up with Dare, ex-cop and now owner of a family bar and restaurant located downstairs from the family Inn. Another of Ms. Ryan's large, broody, tattooed men, Dare has his own demons and, surprisingly to me, a serious insecurity issue. His past left him feeling unworthy. His lady is Kenzie, innkeeper extraordinaire, who has her own secrets and demons. They started off on the wrong foot, and their individual issues caused many a miscommunication between the two. But the chemistry shared couldn't be denied and it was interesting watching them grow closer even as their issues create walls. Their respective pasts also catch up with them, causing even more angst. Loved Dare from the beginning, along with the rest of the Collins family, but it took a bit for me to warm up to Kenzie. I think that was just my issue, though. Her PTSD, which may have been called a different name, but was this, kind of confused me. I got that she was verbally and emotionally abused, but the manifestations where she was very sensitive to violence, seemed a little over the top. I've never had to deal with any of that, that's why I say it was just my issue. Putting that aside, I enjoyed watching her get stronger. I also didn't quite understand why Dare allowed his ex to keep his son away from him as he did. Perhaps there was something in his past, but the man he was didn't warrant it. As it was explained, her money and connections ... And I was happy that by the end, he was able to spend more time with Nate. Their HEA was pleasing, and I look forward to the other two brothers' books, especially Loch and Ainsley, who we got to see a great deal of. All in all, a wonderful spin off of one of my favorite book series, Montgomery Ink.

I loved this book! I love that it's spun from one of my favorite characters from Carrie Ann's Montgomery series, Tabby! This book is about Tabby's older brother who is a protector. Dare protects his family, his family business, and their ways. This made Dare and Kenzie have a rough start as she was an outsider. Kenzie is starting fresh and as she is overcoming an abusive relationship, she is determined to be strong. This increases the friction between her and Dare, but doesn't stop the increasing attraction they feel. They both go through emotional trials as they learn to trust one another. I loved this depth and development of characters. And as always, Carrie gives you enough heat to keep you turning the pages!

This is a great story about love and family and it celebrates those connections that make a life. Dare and Kenzie are a great couple! They have some issues to work out both individually and as a couple. I loved watching their relationship develop and getting to know more about the rest of the family. It was great to see Tabby and Alex pop into the story and keep that connection to CO. I was happy to see that Dare and his ex develop a healthy relationship to co-parent their child and that there was no drama between Dare and her husband. Watching Kenzie deal with her family drama and find a new connection with Dare's circle was amazing. I cannot wait to read the next book!

Whiskey Secrets is Book 1 of a spinoff of the Montgomery Ink series, called the Whiskey and Lies series. This is located in Whiskey, Pennsylvania e is about the Collins brothers. You will remember them from Tabby and Alex's book from Montgomery Ink. Dare Collins is an ex-cop and for years has been the owner of a bar/restaurant in his hometown Whiskey. It is a family business and he is proud of his accomplishments, even if he has to deal with his ex-demands and being apart from his son. Kenzie Owens has left an abusive relationship behind and is ready to begin again in this small town by being the innkeeper of the Collins' family Inn. She is a good person and wants to re-start her life. Sparks from these two characters emerge from every chapter, this book is so sensitive, sexy and it speaks a language of love. Love for the family, love for your friends and companions. A very well written book that I loved to read, and you will feel these characters, they are real.

WHISKEY SECRETS is the first in the Whiskey and Lies series and is a swoony, romantic suspense with a small town vibe. Dare is an ex-cop turned bartender/restaurant owner and has a son he barely sees. He left the force under sad circumstances and is still dealing with that. Kenzie is hired as an innkeeper for his family's hotel which is situated above his own bar and restaurant. She's escaping an abusive ex husband so of course has a past riddled with pain and heartache. They both have issues to overcome (understandably). Sparks begin to fly from their very first meeting and they are HOT together! The plot was good, it flowed well and I loved Dare and Kenzie together. But I wanted MORE from these two! They were so hard on themselves, their self esteem so low throughout most of the book. It was a little frustrating because I really was rooting for Dare to step up, to be more aggressive and fight for what he wanted! And although there is SOME drama, I felt like there could of been more of a build up to the end, more suspense. The end fell kind of flat for me! Overall, this is a nice, easy beginning to what seems like a good series and I'm looking forward to reading about Dare's brothers! Told from dual POVs with a sweet ending. I received, read and voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Another great book by Carrie Ann Ryan!! This is a new series and what I love about it, is that these are Tabby's brothers we are getting to know!! Kenzie is running and wanting to start somewhere new where no one knows her or her past. Kenzie is sweet and kind, but her and Dare don't get off on the right foot right away. Dare is a retired cop who is now the owner of a bar. He is very closed off and just wanting to live a peaceful life with his son, but when he meets Kenzie, he knows that she is going to rock his world. He doesn't fully accept her right away, which I thought was a nice change of pace for a book. They got to know each other as friends first, but from the very beginning, there has always been an attraction between them. I loved that Dare was protective and even though he was retired, he still had his cop senses about him and that truly helped him and Kenzie. These two are perfect for each other and I cannot wait for the next book in this series to come out!!

This was a fantastic read! Dare and Kenzie are both trying to figure out how to move forward in their lives and don't want any complications. The attraction between them is undeniable and the sparks fly! Each has their past to deal with but when they do it together it's even better! I couldn't put the book down!! Can't wait for book 2!!

I am always excited to read a new book from this author. Rarely if ever does she disappoint me and she certainly did not in the case of Whiskey Secrets. Author Carrie Ann Ryan once again has us in where she wants us, and that is now moving with her to a new city, with a new group of friends and family to enjoy life with the Collins family. Tabby's family FINALLY we are getting to know them and see the ins and outs of what makes her who she is from her "la familia" side. This is the story of Dare, her older brother. Not sure if you remember but Dare (with a cute son) was a cop and a darn (not Dare) good one until something happen. Now he owns and runs the bar and restaurant side of the family business. His folks run and operate the hotel side. Well, they did until they decided to bring in a innkeeper to upgrade the hotel and run it. OOPS, they did not run this by Dare nor the other kids. AND the hotel and bar/restaurant share a building. To make matters worse there is a spark between the two ... Dare they act on it?
