Editorial Reviews

Booklist
The fluidly written text incorporates fascinating facts into concise, highly readable paragraphs, and italicized terms are defined both in context and in the glossary. Realistically detailed art completes this nicely done package, which will be a great addition to the science shelves.
Children's Literature
Underneath winter snowdrifts there is a secret world. Young readers will be fascinated to learn how shrews can move around (grainy snow doesn't stick together very well), or that some spiders produce a natural antifreeze. They will also learn words like "subnivean," "dormant," "insectivore" and "depth hoar," because author Jones doesn't condescend to her audience. She does a great job of explaining the science beneath the snow, with a creative nonfiction style that works well as a read-aloud but will intrigue a child who is old enough to read on his own. The illustrations are cross-sections that show the varying levels of this hidden, wintry world. 2001, Court Wayne Press, $15.95. Ages 4 to 10. Reviewer: Donna Freedman
Carefully researched by Jennifer Jones and beautifully illustrated by Consie Powell, Who Lives In The Snow? is a delightfully entertaining and informatively educational picturebook presentation of the life above and below the snow covering a meadow in wintertime. Young readers are treated to the spectrum of life from small insects, spiders, shrews, and beetles, to voles, chipmunks, ferrets, and foxes. Who Lives In The Snow? is an enthusiastically recommended addition to family, school, and community library wildlife picturebook collections.
