Overview

Wicked by Jill Barnett

Winning a stubborn lady turns into the battle of his life for a powerful knight. Lady Sofia Howard has sworn never to marry, after her young heart was broken by an arrogant young squire. She's spurned every suitor to the dismay of her guardian, King Edward I, who finds that even increasing her dower prize will not lure men to offer for the defiant but lonely Sofia. So the king takes matters into his own hands and betroths Sofia to Sir Tobin de Clare, the same man who once broke her heart. Sofia's tattered pride demands that Sir Tobin surrender his heart, and what ensues is a battle of wills that makes war seem tame. But nothing will stop this ruthless warrior from winning his lady. In a classic Barnett battle of will and wit, a knight and his lady find that love at first sight is dangerous at best and never, ever easy.

but also some frustrating moments in Wicked. This is my first book by Barnett so I'm not comparing this read to any others by her, just the book on its own merits. The Heroine, Sofia, is a spirited, smart and passionate well drawn character who was fun to read about. The hero, Tobin de Clare, is also strong willed and passionate, so there's some major head-butting between the two which leads to some interesting and unexpected twists and turns. The beauty of Wicked is in Barnett's smooth, lovely writing, and the depth of the characters. The story is epic, as it spans their meeting as teenagers and leaves us with them well into their forties. The author weaves a bit of magical and majestic into a somewhat realistic exploration into the dance between the sexes, which leads me to the frustrating parts . . . There are no pat or quick resolutions for Sofia and Tobin, but that was, for the most part, okay with me. Watching them grow and change and learn made the happily ever after more sweet, more full and meaningful. For all of Tobin's sometimes prideful boneheaded moves, his love for Sofia is never in doubt . . . at least not to me, the reader. Jill Barnett is a very good writer and story teller, I'm very happy to have discovered her.

I have read both Wonderful and Wild and thought they were great so when I picked up Wicked I thought I was in for a treat. The characters just are not as entertaining nor interesting as the characters were in the two prior books in this series. I ALWAYS finish a book I started but this one is very slow and just hasn't captured my attention. Overall, I would say she is an excellent author and I would definately purchase a book written by her again.

This is so well written that the story draws the reader in and encourages today's women to consider just how much our women liberators have done for us. Should we ask what we need to do?

I usually love Jill B books. They are funny but not this one. It is so depressing that it's hard to finish. The heroines life sad.
