Reviewed by Laura Carter for Readers Favorite Tyler Martin is your typical good girl; she volunteers with the elderly, always listens to her parents and has never had a boyfriend. All of her friends describe Tyler as ‘sweet’ and she is sick of it. She wants more out of life than staying in the small town of Winter Haven and being the girl everyone else wants her to be. Moving out of her parents’ house to gain some much needed independence is the first step and when the town’s prodigal son saves her life Tyler thinks she may have finally found her way out. Unfortunately, the more time Tyler spends with Devon the more she starts to fall for him and being in love with the local bad boy may not be the best idea. This is a lovely coming of age story, though most of the story is from Tyler’s point of view. We also get to see some of her two best friends’ stories as well. Tyler struggles with adulthood and her first love whilst Cordelia and Jennifer both face their own problems. It is a beautiful, well-written, thought provoking story. Mell Mckenzie has truly written a very good book in the form of "Winter Haven". Older teenagers will relate most to the characters in this book but the depth and emotion in this novel will draw in adult readers also. I am looking forward to seeing more of these characters as they overcome the hurdles that life as a new adult throws at them.
It's really a coming of age romance story. It's moody, at times funny, and at times sad, and the ending is well. It makes you want to read more, like it can't be over like that.
