The characters are so well and fully realized, they make the story. Each one is unique and individual. There is a good, solid, interesting plot. I couldn't give it 5 stars, though, because I had a real problem with a likeable character giving her virginity to a married man, no matter what the circumstances. I skipped over the sex scenes with them because it turned my stomach and ruined what could have been a great story. There was far too much crude and very vulgar language and situations for my taste, also. I understand some of the sexual situations were necessary for the plot, but I cringed every time a scene at the Perry's came up. If you believed this story to really be evocotive of the 1930s, you would believe based on this story that everyone then went to bed with everyone they met and had sex on every occasion with every chance encounter. Counter that with the reality that most women were virgins on their wedding night in that era, and it becomes clear this is not an accurate picture of the thirties. What annoyed me the most was that this author really can write well, but she used her talent to throw in modern sexual mores and worse yet, so many extremely uncomfortable and nasty sexual situations. It was just too much; too nasty and beyond revolting. There were truly several scenes that made me want to vomit.
