So what’s this eBook about? Make It Work? Women?
Women Make It Work is about Generation X & Y working women, and how they’re juggling it all, setting technology boundaries, multi-tasking, flex-time, technology as the Great Liberator, and much more… it’s is a pick-up and put-down eBook.
My associate, Kimberley Stewart, and I conducted focus groups at Stanford Graduate School of Business, and UCLA Anderson School of Management (open to the public), gathering responses from over 40 working women. We also pulled in 200+ responses from our Survey Monkey online surveys (results at http://www.strategyboost.com).
And, I interviewed fifty-three women from the Bay Area and Central Coast of California, and from Sydney, Australia, who share their insights on the effect of technology and work, allowing us to understand their multi-faceted roles as earner, wife, and parent/care giver. The interviews speak to you, and resonate with your daily ups-and-downs.
So who are Generation X & Yers? Generation X born between 1967 - 1982 (age 29-44) are the smallest cohort because of birthrate decline post 1964, and comprise of 49 million, Baby Boomers 75 million, and Generation Y 70 million. They grew up with television, PC’s, divorce, became “latchkey” kids, experienced day care, and saw first-hand their parents getting laid off from corporations or faced job insecurity. They also experienced the Dot-com bubble and burst of the 1990s! For Generation Y (Echo Boomers, Millennials) born 1983 - 1998, they use technology for everything-all-the-time. Raised on 24/7 connectedness they are accustomed to multi-tasking - - juggling e-mail on their device while surfing online and talking on the phone. Women in this cohort, similar to Generation X, have a college degree oftentimes an advanced one, and strive for financial independence. They’re fairly new to the workplace, and are ready to become tech millionaires tomorrow!
Generation X & Y women have moved beyond traditional women’s occupations (teachers, nurses, administrators, salespeople), and are in careers and professions that provide opportunities for development and partnerships. They’re also proficient with new technology because of their childhood experiences with a PC. Now Generation Xers are being actively pursued in the workplace because they comprise of 49 million (USA) compared to Baby Boomer’s (75 million) who are retiring shortly. An upcoming shortage of middle-senior managers is forecasted! And, here’s one more piece to consider. Corporate boards are looking for future talented executives who are social, who understand Social Business. Need I say any more!
And, yes, global women appear to have similarities in flexibility, entrepreneurial ideas, and much more, and this varies among different cultures. But what is certain is that working from anyplace and anytime is central to Generation X & Y working women of the 2010s.
