Throughout her childhood, Tara Westover could not attend school, had restricted access to learning resources and was denied basic medical facilities. Born into a Mormon household in Idaho, she grew up learning about the faith. Her days were spent working in her family's junkyard or stewing herbs for her mother, who was a self-taught herbalist and midwife. It wasn't until she was seventeen that she set foot in a classroom for the first time. She continued her education in the years that followed, graduating with honors from Brigham Young University and later receiving a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The Trinity College, Cambridge, Department of History awarded her a Ph.D. in history in 2014. Despite all odds, she was able to pursue her desire for higher learning.
Westover was the A.M. Rosenthal Writer in Residence at the Shorenstein Center for International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School in the fall of 2019. During the Spring 2020 semester, she was a Senior Research Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. Her debut book, Educated, was released in 2018.
