Overview

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

In this inspiring book, Katie Couric distills the ingenious, hard-won insights of such leaders and visionaries as Maya Angelou, Jimmy Carter, Michael J. Fox, and Ken Burns, who offer advice about life, success, and happiness—how to take chances, follow one’s passions, overcome adversity and inertia, commit to something greater than ourselves, and more. Along the way, Katie Couric reflects on her own life, and on the shared wisdom, and occasional missteps, that have guided her from her early days as a desk assistant at ABC to her groundbreaking work as a broadcast journalist. Moving and empowering, The Best Advice I Ever Got is for all of us, young or old, who want to hear from some of today’s best and brightest about how they got it right, got it wrong, and came out on top—so we can too.

  • The Best Advice I Ever Got

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Collections of good advice always ensnare our attention, but Katie Couric's anthology is exceptional by any standard. To find out why, just flip through the table of contents. Living media legend Couric has enlisted an awesome array of contributors. The range is awesome: Stephen Colbert and Anna Quindlen; Colin Powell and Alicia Keys; Jane Lynch and General David Petraeus; George Lopez and Helen Mirren; Michael Bloomberg and Michael J. Fox; Whoopi Goldberg and Suze Orman; Malcolm Gladwell and Mario Batali; Jimmy Carter and Jimmy Kimmel; the all-star list goes on and on and on.

Library Journal
Using her experience as a CBS news anchor, Couric has collected advice and life-changing anecdotes from more than 95 of America's best-known personalities. Couric groups the entries into ten broad categories, including the warning to never give in, the challenge to be unreasonable, and the recommendation to find joy. Luminaries range from Donald Trump and Madeleine K. Albright to Chris Evert and Alicia Keys. Maria Shriver encourages the reader to not be afraid of being afraid, while Mo'Nique talks about growing through rather than going through things in life. Almost all of the stories share the common thread of the writer who faced struggles and discouragement before achieving success. Couric introduces each chapter with her own experience of finding her passion, keeping commitments to her daughters, advocating for cancer research and awareness, and doing her best. In a particularly touching piece, war hero Edmund N. Carpenter II writes about the things he wants to do before he dies, including bringing happiness to others and feeling a great love. This book will make an ideal graduation gift as well as an inspirational guide to self-improvement. It can't miss.
Kirkus Reviews

Award-winning anchor of theCBS Evening Newscompiles insights and advice from influential public figures for any stage of life.

What do Beyoncé and General David Petraeus have in common? They're among the more than 100 entertainers, entrepreneurs, political figures and journalists doling out words of wisdom in Couric's collection. In an easy-to-read format, the author assembles an array of advice from successful people, and her tone is casual and upbeat. Divided into different themes, such as courage, hard work and contribution, the book veers between the humorous and the poignant. Finance expert Suze Orman describes her struggles as a waitress, and late war hero Edmund N. Carpenter II shares his approach to life in a candid essay he wrote in 1938 at the tender age of 17.Couric seamlessly weaves in the lessons she has learned along the way, sharing anecdotes from her own life, which has not been without hardship. She opens up about her husband's early death from cancer and the sexist attitudes she faced as the first woman to solo-anchor a major newscast. Most of the advice found here isn't earth-shattering—Bill Cosby says he was his own worst enemy, Larry King suggests readers "learn how to listen"—but it comes from people who have excelled with talent, luck and lots of hard work. The author's profits will be donated to Scholarship America, an organization that helps students go to college.

Readers looking to browse for a little inspiration can also help a worthy cause.

Best Advice Book That I Have Ever Read

This book reads like you were talking to a great friend. I love it. If you want some more great advice, check out a little book called "When God Stopped Keeping Score." I have been singing that book's praises not because it needs it, but because it's good and many people can be helped by it.

    filled with platitudes.

Pre-ordered it. Got it on Monday. Skimmed it. No real depth. Interesting at points, but mostly a vapid celebration of celebrity.

    Terrible Waste of Time

This book is total air. There is no real advice to be taken from the book. It is a collection of obvious statements. It also is the author's effort to make herself look great. I wish I could get the time back in my life that I spent reading this book.

The only thing good was that some of the money spent went towards a charity

Clearly this book was just slapped together to get on the shelves quickly -- she claims it is for a good cause -- and perhaps it is -- so if you buy it, look at it as a donation to the cause -- that's how I look at it -- this book will be included in my garage sale this weekend for $1.

    Waste of a Good Tree!

Don't bother wasting your time with this book! Katie Couric needs to find something else to do. Environmentalists should be upset that her book has wasted the perfectly good life of a tree!
