Overview

Although unfinished during his lifetimee Bouvard and Pécuchet is now considered to be one of Flaubert's greatest masterpieces. In his own wordse the novel is "a kind of encyclopedia made into farce . . . A book in which I shall spit out my bile." At the center of this book are Bouvard and Pécuchete two retired clerks who set out in a search for truth and knowledge with persistent optimism in light of the fact that each new attempt at learning about the world ends in disaster. In the literary tradition of Rabelaise Cervantese and Swifte this story is told in that blend of satire and sympathy that only genius can compounde and the reader becomes genuinely fond of these two Don Quixotes of Ideas. Apart from being a new translatione this edition includes Flaubert's Dictionary of Received Ideas.

Meet the Author

Gustave Flaubert (1821) is considered to be one of the most important French novelists of the nineteenth century. He's most well known for his novel Madame Bovarye and for his desire to write "a book about nothinge" a novel in which all external elementse especially the presence of the authore have been eliminatede leaving nothing but style itself. Often considered a member of the naturalist schoole Flaubert despised categorizations of this sorte and in novels like Bouvard and Pécuchet demonstrates the inaptness of this label. In addition to these two novelse he is also the author of A Sentimental Educatione Salamboe Three Talese and The Temptation of Saint Anthony.

    A fun, surprising read

For lovers of Flaubert this is a must read. The book, despite its mammoth undertaking of being a sort of History of Western Thought, is really a light, almost comical read. These two dottering men make the topics of agronomics and philosophy almost fun! Put into the perspective of his life's work, this book reads like a last symphony - full of sound and color, with a soft ending. A requiem in print.
