Overview

Everyone has a past, but for most it isn't so far in the past as Seth Sangre. His past is literally from thousands of years ago. Seth's past led him to the present seeking something that might help him save his country from destruction. He has been in the present for over three years now, and he just found exactly what he has been looking for.

Mari had dreams of college being a fresh start, one where she would start over and not fall for the good looking player like high school. Unfortunately for her, that's exactly what ends up falling into her lap on the first day she moves into the dorms. Now she has to hold to her promise to herself not fall for the handsome Seth Sangre. But he doesn't plan to make it easy for her. Seth has already marked her as his next conquest. As the semester progresses, Mari learns that Seth might just have a past of his own that's literally in the past. Suddenly, Mari finds her future along with her past put into question. She's connected to Seth far more than she ever wanted to be, and maybe he isn't the player who she thought he was. If Mari can trust her heart enough to follow him, Seth will lead Mari on an adventure of a lifetime-and reveal family secrets she never knew existed.

I fell instantly in love with these characters. And the storyline keeps you from falling asleep to turn the next page! A great read, but with a cliffhanger end!!! I hate that. I will indeed be purchasing the next book to find out what happens.

I absolutely love reading about time travel, or even watching movies. Depending on the route the author decides to go, it can sometimes be a little confusing. That's part of the reason I loved Carnelian so much--it was easy to follow! This was right up my alley and an excellent start to a series. I loved that it had more of an innocent romance and nothing too over-the-top. I can't wait to read the rest in this series, and I definitely think it has the potential (so far) to be one of the next "big" series!

It was an amazing book, but I've got to say I wish there was at least 8 books in the series. I'm a book-person, and a book is like food. Without it I wld die. And ok that was a bit of an exaggeration but that book was amazing, and is just such a mystery to discover.

Carnelian is the first in the new Chalcedony Chronicles, a new adult series that promises a bit of a sci-fi flavor in the form of time travel.  I have mixed opinions about this book, mostly about the level of emphasis paid to different aspects of the plot. Mari is a college freshman, hours away from home and seeking some level of independence from her rather ordered life and overprotective family.  It is interesting that she almost comes off as socially awkward when she first arrives at school, a little over dramatic when it comes to friends and relationships.  The reality is that she is an attractive girl that isn't socially awkward, but gun shy when it comes to guys, although she frequently came across as a bit arrogant in her early interactions with Seth.  The characters, all of them, are interesting and varied, all characters that were easy to relate to or to understand. On her first day, she meets three brothers and it quickly becomes clear that they have secrets.  Seemingly against her will, she falls for one of the three guys and the love fest snowballs quickly.  For someone who argued against relationships as much as Mari did, she fell into it pretty easily, but I can live with that. Most of the book felt like a contemporary, new adult romance, with little to do with the sci-fi/time travel aspect.  This is where the questions of emphasis come in.  There was a lot of attention paid to a collegiate competition that really had little to do with the story and didn't really move it forward in any way.  On the flip side, the main thrust behind the brothers and the time travel was seemingly a big part of the main story line, yet it almost seemed as if it were brushed aside for less integral points. There were things that the main characters were supposed to be doing in order to save humanity, but there was far more attention paid to the romantic aspect.  The mythology behind the time travel had massive potential, mythology blended with ancient history in an interesting way. Despite these issues, there was so much potential that I wanted to know more and kept turning the pages.  Regardless of my own personal issues, there was more than enough to the story to keep me interested.. Things to love...    --The blend of created mythology and ancient history.    --The light moments and the dark moments. Things I wanted more/less of...    --More emphasis on the sci-fi aspect.    --More development of the main thrust of the story. My Recommendation:  Yes, I had issues, but I still recommend this book.  The writing style is good and the story has great bones.  I have already purchased (and read) the next book in the series!  I gave it 3.8 mugs.

After reading a few stale romances, lately, this book was a refreshing dose of awesome. I already LOVE time-travels, so from the get-go I knew that Carnelian was a must-read. One of the things I loved the most about this story was the strong characters: main and supporting. Both Mari and Seth had me rooting for them--not just as a couple--but as individuals from the beginning. So many stories fail to make me love the people in them that when I read a writer like Ms. McMichael it gives me some great hope! The supporting characters were amazing! Ty, Dee, and Sim made me love them! And I LOVE when characters make me love them! While I absolutely do recommend Carnelian, keep in mind that it IS YA. Now, I just so happen to believe that YA can be a pretty underrated genre. However, there are times when you're in the heads of the "young adults" who are the voices of these stories and you have to stop and remind yourself that you were slightly less mature when that age, too. This story is the same. There are moments when I felt a little disconnected from the characters because of that. BUT, I think that's normal. It just makes what will happen next even more entertaining. All in all, I'm pretty excited to read the next book in the series, and I'm going to HAVE to pick up another B. Kristen McMichael book. She is one. Talented. Author.

This time-travel romance adventure hooked me from the first page. I immediately like Mari and Seth and thought they were great characters. The plot was also captivating and kept me intrigued all they way to the mind blowing end! I loved this wonderful book, so DON'T pass it up!

This was such an interesting read.  I have to admit at the beginning I wasn't sure I was going to like this one.  It was a bit slow, but man oh man, am I glad I stayed with it.   I love past and present mixing, and coming together.  It always makes things so very interesting.  Seth and his "brothers" are hot shots on campus, and Seth has decided he has an eye for Mari.  Mari has decided she is not getting involved again, with someone who isn't serious.  Seth has a players reputation, and she is not going for it. Well, Seth has a story to tell.  There is far more to this handsome, jock, than meets the eye.  He and his brothers are always in the right place at the right time, and always seem to be saving Mari.  Mari, finally gets some answers, and lets her walls fall down and finds out what a great guy Seth is.  She is hooked, and then her world changes. I enjoyed the story going from present to past.  I really liked how things connected in the past, and came back to the present.  There is so much to this story. The past has adventure, mystery, an ancient Princess, a Gatekeeper, and Soldiers.  The present, hosts the Gatekeeper, an ancient Princess and Soldiers.  It is so fantastic how they come together.   I was at an appointment when I finished this book, and let out an audible "uuuhhhhh".  It so cannot end the way it ended.  I need the next book like NOW.  hehehe.  This is going to be a great series, and this book was a great opener.

Love through the ages, two souls meant for each other, but living centuries and continents apart. A goddess steps in and with the magic of love and a special stone, Seth and his “two brothers” are thrust into the contemporary world that Mari resides in, only to have to wait three years for her to show up. Are Mari and Seth destined to be together, not if Mari has anything to say about it. Carnelian by B. Kristin McMichael tells a fascinating tale of one cynical college freshman who fights the attraction to one of the college’s biggest players refusing to be another notch on his belt. Ms. McMichael has created a very realistic look at college life, the new found freedoms and pressures from all around. Her tale is a fresh take on time travel and soul mates and doesn’t rush into the relationship, but lets it slowly bloom and grow throughout each page. Loved the concept, loved all of the supporting characters, who truly added charm, intrigue and life to this tale. Seth is a little mysterious as he dodges questions about his past, but he wears his heart on his sleeve and shows all the signs of a young man in love. The only problem I had was with Mari, herself. She comes across as an overachiever who MUST excel while complaining about the shortcomings of others, as she reaffirms her athletic abilities and her academic prowess, over and over to one and all. For such a young person she appears very cynical, hard, distrusting and self-important. As a role model, Mari leaves much to be desired. For me, she stole the sparkle of this otherwise fantastic read. Ms. McMichael has a truly wonderful gift of storytelling and creating a perfect flow, her heroine was just too negative for me. 3.5 Stars

I won the free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. So, here is my thoughts: It could have been better. Characters: I loved everyone of them. And for the first time, I loved the lead female, Mari. She was so familiar to us all. Bookworm, not perfect kickass kinda girl, not likes big parties, responsible, bold when it is necessary… So, she was so lovable. Lead male character, Seth; I mostly like the second male characters in the books -like Ty in here- but for the first time again, I loved Seth. Yes, he was so handsome and hot and all but he was normal kinda teenager who happened to be popular and playboy (at first at least). I would love Ty to be my big huggable best friend. He was my first love in this book. (Obviously) I even liked Dee. The characters were looked so real. That's why i liked this part. Story; that i didn't like. Plot is definitely great. That's what maked me want to read the book.  Something was off in the story. Shortly, liked the characters, liked the plot and I'm wondering what we will learn and how it will end but the writing couldn't suck me in so i can not tell you that OMG THAT WAS AWESOME!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect going into this book. It sounded interesting, but I wasn't quite sure where it was going to go, so I proceeded with caution. Fortunately, it turned out that I had nothing to worry about. Carnelian was a lovely YA/NA romance! It was sweet, romantic, and full of secrets that took me by surprise. I really liked this wonderful book. Mari was a good heroine. She was very determined and knew to fight for what she wanted. I got a little annoyed with her at first, because she seemed to reject Seth just for the sake of rejection. But, overall, I really liked her. Seth was wonderful. He was very sweet and was devoted to those he cared about. He was adorable and I really liked him. The romance was lovely. Mari and Seth were so sweet together. I loved how they were both so devoted to each other, even with the rather formidable obstacles in their way. I thought they were a perfect couple. The plot was fast paced and i was kept interested the entire way through. There were secrets about the characters that I never saw coming, and that kept me drawn in, wanting to find out more. I really enjoyed the story and the ending has me curious to see what's coming up next in book 2. I'm definitely looking forward to that. Carnelian was a wonderful YA/NA read. I really liked this book, from the romance to the secrets. It was a truly enjoyable read. Romance lovers, this is a book worth checking out. *I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review

*I received a copy of this book for free from the author through the Never Too Old For Y.A. & N.A. Books Group. This in no way effect my final review of this book.* A super fast read or maybe it just seemed that way because I was into the story. Took me less than a day reading this book on and off to finish.  The prologue starts off clearly sometime in the past. All you know is a young man and his two companions are desperately praying to any god they can think of to help them.  Once the first chapter starts you are in now times and following Mari's POV as she heads off to college. Her grandfather is big in the antiques business and is always going off places on trips to check them out. Unfortunately for Mari that means settling in at college alone as her grandfather and her mom had to turn back before they even made it to college. From there you get into the usual stuff that comes with starting college, meeting you new roommate, getting the lay of the land, seemly being stalked by the rich, hot quarterback, Seth? Wait what? That totally did not happen to me during my college experience. Of course Mari has been through this type of thing in high school and it did not work out well. She vows to never date a player again. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?) He seems pretty persistent. Mari hits is off with one of Seth's friends. Mari herself is even having trouble staying away as she seems drawn to him. What follows is a seemly normal contemporary college romance type of story, but there is more to it. You see Seth is really that guy we met at the beginning of the book (I'm not really giving anything away here as this is stated in the description). Apparently his prayers were answered by one of the gods and he was sent into the future to find Mari, only he didn't know it was her specifically. She is the key to helping him in the past, but how? Their stories start to interweave more deeply from there and, of course, when things really start to get interesting, the story ends! I can't wait to see where the story goes! I liked the characters in this book. I liked the general story idea. I was okay with the pacing. It turned out to be the perfect book to read at the time I read it. I found it to be a really good one too as I finished this story a few days ago and have read a few since. I know I got a little behind on the writing of actual reviews when I was a little under the weather.  I would possibly read this book again and I would definitely recommend it to a friend. As this is the second series I have checked out by this author and liked, I also plan to keep an eye out for future books. 4.5 Stars Raised Up from 4 because the story has stuck with me (in a good way).

5 stars I'm just a die hard fan of time traveling and not only that it involves Egypt. I rarely find books whose settings are in Egypt. At first, I didn't know that it involved time traveling and Egypt. The beginning started out as something regular and the meeting of Mari and Seth was quite different. A guy falling asleep in her lap. The attraction was there for Mari and it happened to Seth afterwards. Their relationship started as slow first because Seth was known as a player (but due to reasons) and Mari after having a bad relationship in high school was cautious of Seth. But as she hanged out with Seth she realizes there is more to Seth than just his image. She then also realized there is more to Seth especially when she learned of their nonexistent background plus an incident that happened which made Mari realized that Seth has a bigger secret and when she finds out it is something she never imagined. The characters were very likeable instantly. I like Mari's strong character and her stubbornness is just right that it doesn't make her character annoying. Her love for Seth is strong she would do anything to find and be with him even if it means traveling back to the past. Seth is just amazing. He is very sweet but has a strong character too. I loved that he loves Mari to the point he doesn't want to break her heart especially when he needs to go back and that his father has plans for him. His letter for Mari was very sweet and touching that I too cried with Mari. Did I mention the side characters were amazing as well. Ty and Dee showed a strong bond of friendship with Seth and that they will always be there to support him. Sim's personality may be opposite of Mari but they fit well together. Sim is supportive as well and I like how she encourages more like stubbornly let Mari be involved in having a joyful experience of life. I'm just sad to say that it took near the ending for the story to get to the point and that when it became more interesting it just ended. I also should have take heed of the warning of the author because when I read the preview of book 2 I was like nooooo!!!! I can't wait for Book 2 and read what happens next. I received a copy thanks to Never Too Old For Y.A. & N.A. Books

I would like to thank the group Never Too Old For Y.A. & N.A. Books and the author B. Kristin McMichael for allowing me to review this book for an honest review.. I really liked the characters in this book, especially Ty, he was my favorite of the bunch mostly because he was so funny and just have this charisma that just makes fall in love with him. Mari and Seth's love story was too much of a fairy tale to me, they fell in love too quick and even though Mari played hard to get, she decided to leave everything behind to follow Seth, even her mother and grandpa. Mari's attitude dissapointed me, she knew him for what over 3 months and she is deciding to leave everything behind, not just that she was cool with him being from the past. Anyways, I would love to read more about Mari and Seth's love story, just because they both were right for each other and it was lovely to read how he found her and how much love they felt for each other. I was sad to read about Ty's past, someone that has such a big heart, gorgeous smile and so easygoing should be allow to have a better life. I really want to read the next book, especially after the ending, such an epic finale, and not just that the sneek peek of the next book, just left me wanting more, so unfair....... Ooops, I almost excluded, gorgeous quite and reserved Dee, even though we got to see a litte bit of him, at the end of the book just left me with a lot of questions about him, he really caught my interest and I hope I hear/read more of him on the next book!!!!
