Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The cat clans of Hunter's "Warriors" series live by a strict code, but where did those rules come from? Code of the Clans provides the answer. The origin of each of the fifteen laws, from the full moon truce to the regulations governing succession, is outlined and narrated by Leafpool, medicine cat to Thunder Clan. Most of the stories are no more than two to three pages in length, making this book ideal for partitioned reading before bed or at the end of class. The plot and characters of each tale are alternately entertaining, endearing, and frightening; but, it should be noted that their short length and the reader's assumed background make this strictly a companion book. Non-fans are unlikely, for example, to appreciate the looming menace hinted at in a story in which "Tigerkit" is rescued, nor the foreshadowing implied when a senile elder unwisely makes the leader's words into law. Each story is accompanied by either realistic pencil drawings or full-page, glossy color prints. While few teachers will find use for this book in a language arts setting, classrooms already reading Hunter's texts could incorporate it into a creative social studies lesson on the origin of laws and law documents. Meet the Author

Erin Hunter
Erin Hunter

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    1. Also Known As:
Erin Hunter is the pseudonym for three writers: Cherith Baldry, Kate Cary, and Victoria Holmes
    2. Hometown:
All three writers live in the U.K.

Read an Excerpt

Warriors: Code of the Clans

Chapter One

Many moons ago, a community of cats settled in dense woodland close to the edge of a moor. Some were kittypets intrigued by the idea of exploring beyond their housefolk's backyard; others had been born and raised in the wild, by cats who knew how to catch their own prey and find shelter in the cold nights of leaf-bare.

The woodland, with the river running fast and deep at the edge of the trees, proved to be good territory for the cats. There was enough shelter for every cat, enough prey to feed them all, and the freedom to hunt among the trees, on the open moor, and along the fish-filled river.

The cats began to settle according to their preferences for hunting and prey. The fish-eaters kept mostly to the banks of the river, making their dens among the reeds and twisted willow roots; the mouse-pouncers stayed under the densest trees, perfecting their leaps among the tangled undergrowth; the rabbit-chasers, faster and leaner than the other cats, kept to the open moor; the squirrel-stalkers settled in the sparser woodland, where they learned to climb trees and hunt among the branches; and the cats who had a taste for snakes and lizards, and the cunning to catch them on marshy ground, settled among brittle grass stalks and rattling pine trees on the farthest edge of the territory.

There were no borders at first, and within each hunting ground the cats lived separately, meeting only as they went in pursuit of the same prey. Occasionally cats clashed over a piece of fresh-kill or a good place for a den, but battles between large numbers of cats were unheard of.

Then a time came whenprey was scarce, and there were too many mouths to feed and bodies to shelter in each hunting ground. Battles broke out, just a few cats at first, but more and more until hunting ground took on hunting ground, fighting for survival, not just for themselves, but for the cats who lived alongside them. After one dreadful battle, when the ground beneath the four great oak trees turned red with blood, the spirits of the dead cats came back to plead for peace with the strongest cats from each hunting ground: Wind, River, Thunder, Shadow, and Sky.

The five vowed to their fallen companions that they would find a way to put an end to the fighting, to live in their separate hunting grounds in communities that would preserve each territory for generations of cats to come.

    CODE of the CLANS

I loved this book! Leafpool ( ThunderClans medicine cat) takes you through all the different laws or codes and tells of the stories of how the codes came to be part of the warrior code. Leafpool also tells of some of the rules that didn't make it into the warrior code also. I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did and find out the secerts of the code.

    After TLH 12

(Note adding two more cats. Poppyfall and Voletail from Shadowclan) Voletail runs after Littlecloud into camp. He sees Tigerheart with his apprentice Shadepaw, Shrewfoot, and Dewfur going on patrol. Voletail ran into Tawnypelt's new kits, Cinderkit, Frostkit, and Greenkit. They all jumped up and down excitedly. "We're going ti have new denmates!" They all shouted. Cinderkit was tripped by his brothers and started yowling at them. "They all must be happy about Pinenose's pregnantcy," meowed Littlecloud. The two cats went into their den and found a thrush and squirrel lying there. Squirrelpaw entered behind them with his mentor Applefur. "Like the prey me and Brownpaw caught? Buzzardtail made a big fuss about how we could of gotton more prey. It's hard to believe him and Poppyfall are littermates! I feel bad that Brownpaw's mentor is him. Buzzardtail barely compliments him! But he's pigeon brained," Squirrelpaw meowed. "Well I don't care what Buzzardtail thinks, this is fine for two apprentices," Littlecloud explained. Voletail thought he sort of agreed with Buzzrdtail, but didn't say aloud. Just then Ivytail entered with her apprentice Whitepaw. "Hey Applefur! Poppyfall and Leopardpaw are waiting for you to join our hunting patrol," Ivytail meows. Voletail watches them leave then eats his prey. He takes to thrush and Littlecloud taking the squirrel. Hint to next post: the cats of the clans.
