K-Gr 4-- The friendly folk of Cranberryport celebrate the Fourth of July in their eighth adventure. A hungry, homeless donkey--accidentally left behind by a traveling circus--is rescued from Mr. Grape's wrath by Mr. Whiskers and Maggie. While the mayor tries to contact the circus about the animal, Maggie and her grandmother devise a scheme to raise the money needed to feed it at the holiday fete. At the close of a glorious day, the money has been raised; Mr. Whiskers and Maggie are the owners of the donkey; and grouchy Mr. Grape, once again, is the loser of the verbal battle with his neighbors. The recipe for cranberry punch, served at the picnic, is included. As with the Devlins' earlier titles, the story has just the right amount of humor, plot, and suspense for a successful read-aloud that will also satisfy young independent readers. --Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NE
