Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In these Halloween-themed episodes, "bright blue Dragon never disappoints," wrote PW in a starred review. "The series hero is affability incarnate." Ages 4-8. (Sept.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In three stories that center around Halloween, Dragon finds himself in several amusing and scary predicaments. When he goes to find a very large Halloween pumpkin, he is too late and has to settle for six small ones. He builds a monster jack-o'-lantern that even frightens him. At the Halloween party, his unplanned costume change scares his friends, but when they learn it is Dragon inside the pumpkin head, almost everyone is amused. In the final story, Dragon is very hungry and while walking through the woods, he hears a rumbling sound. Thanks to squirrel, Dragon learns that it is his own tummy making all the sounds. He races home and prepares a giant Halloween feast just for himself. 1995 (orig.

K-Gr 2-This fifth book about Dragon is just right for beginning readers who want to be scared, but not too scared. In three episodes, Dragon cleverly turns six small, unimposing pumpkins into a tall, frightening jack-o-lantern; accidentally wears the most fearsome costume at a Halloween party; and is frightened by his own moaning and groaning hungry stomach as he walks home through a dark forest. Pilkey's bright, bold watercolors complement and visually enhance the text. Young readers will laugh out loud as they enjoy this scary Halloween from a safe vantage point. A nice, reassuring companion to Van Leeuwen's Oliver & Amanda's Halloween (Dial, 1992).-Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID

    Halloween Fun

My 5 year old son loves this series and the Halloween story is one of his favorites! Dragon is just as lovable as in the others, and there are laugh out loud moments!

    Good Reading!

Dav Pilkey doesn't use rhyme, or cadence in his writing, but the text is well-chosen, which makes for easy, enjoyable reading. The illustrations are simple, but convey the tales with ease. The author/artist utilizes bright, bold colors that captivate young eyes, yet remind us of the season. My son was only 2 1/2 when I discovered this book, and although a bit young to read all 3-stories in one sitting, he appreciated them individually. At no time was he scared, but highly amused. Each story takes about 2-minutes to read aloud, so in total 6-minutes or more. Parents will appreciate this book for the humor, and the non-scary appeal.

    Great book!

My granddaughter loves the Dragon series. It's good for those young readers who aren't very sure of their reading ability. Dragon is a wonderful character, she has all of the books, wish there were more.

    Great Book

This book is GREAT and my 4 year old loves it and we laugh and laugh whenever we read it. I would have gave it 5 stars but the one thing I don't like is the author uses the word 'stupid'. Which I really don't think is appropriate for kids to say... I just leave that word out when I read it, it's a really great book and the illustrations are fantastic...
