Children's Literature - Michael Jung
Best known by the masses from Robert Downey Jr.'s 2008 summer blockbuster movie, Iron Man has been one of Marvel Comics' flagship characters since 1963. Secretly billionaire industrialist Tony Stark, who created a high-tech battlesuit to save his life, Iron Man is unique among superheroes for being the company mascot of Stark's company Stark International. Unfortunately, when business rival Justin Hammer hires corporate saboteur Spymaster to hack into Iron Man's systems and force the hero to destroy billions of dollars in city property, Stark International's stock plummets—leaving it open to a hostile takeover by Hammer. Now, it is up to Tony's secretary Pepper Potts and engineer Jim Rhodes to save not only Stark International but also Tony as Spymaster uses his newfound control to try and kill Iron Man. Fred Van Lente and James Cordeire create a fast-paced, intriguing story that introduces readers to dirty business dealings (albeit with fantasy elements). The story in this library-bound title is self-contained, but given its short length (twenty-two pages) librarians might want to invest in Marvel's digest-size volumes, which provide more stories for lower prices.
