Overview

Brunel, Britain’s most famous engineer and one of the true Great Britons.

Full color with many new and unpublished illustrations.

A story of superlatives, from the world’s biggest ship to the world’s flattest arch, from the first underwater tunnel to the widest railway lines.

Brunel, Britain’s most famous engineer, left a truly magnificent legacy of industrial architecture and design throughout London, the South West and South Wales, as well as the magnificent SS Great Britain, in Bristol. Using many new images, as well as archive photos, John Christopher tells the story of Brunel and his fabulous railways, stations, bridges and ships. Contrasting old and new, he shows just how Brunel’s designs have stood the test of time and just how many are still in use today, a good 160-180 years after they were designed and built by Brunel.

From Paddington, the Great Western Railway’s London terminus, to Temple Meads, from the SS Great Britain to the extensions of Bristol’s City Docks, from the Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash, near Plymouth, to the GWR’s flat-arched bridge over the Thames at Maidenhead, the complete spectrum of Brunel’s finest work is shown here.
