Ostensibly, he is there just for the duration of his spring break, but events soon overtake the original plans. Accompanied by the mysterious skipper Silver and an observant Indian tracker, Raul, the Lansa family is embroiled in a series of frightening encounters that threaten to derail the plans for the preserve. Several plot devices are fairly implausible, and clichés such as the "noble savage" mar what is otherwise a taut thriller. The author's experience as a field biologist lends authority to the information about wildlife research.

In this sequel to Thunder Cave (Hyperion, 1995), Jacob again joins his father in researching and protecting an endangered speciesthis time it's to save the jaguar and its habitat in the Amazon rainforest. After a mysterious accident kills the expedition leader, seasoned-captain Jay Silver is hired to take the remaining researchers into the tropical interior. As Jacob; Dr. Lansa; and his girlfriend, an experienced botanist, journey up the Amazon River they witness the devastation of the land and indigenous people caused by the influx of fortune seekers and exploitation of natural resources. The group links up with an Indian who helps them take a family of jaguars to the remote region where a refuge is to be established. But even the harsh beauty of an isolated area cannot protect the animals from human greed, and danger lurks in the heart of the jungle. Although the plot sometimes seems contrived, this fast-paced adventure and survival tale blends enough action, suspense, and legend to keep readers interested until the end. The lush tropical rainforest serves as an unexpected but colorful setting for this sequel to Smith's Thunder Cave (1995, not reviewed).

Jake Lansa, 14, is angry when his father, Robert "Doc" Lansa, leaves him in the care of a retirement home with his grandfather, while he goes off to a jaguar preserve in the jungles of Manaus, near Brazil. The early scenes in the retirement facility are humorous and touching, but the pace accelerates once Jake flies down for a visit with his dad. In one of the novel's most dramatic moments, a confrontation between father and son is interrupted by an explosion aboard the boat Doc has chartered. Jake is forced to become the ultralight pilot of the expedition, and to hire the mysterious Captain Silver to take them upriver. Jake's crash course in piloting is exciting, as is the journey. The rainforest in the background brings the plight of this endangered environment into focus for young readers: Smith's portrayal of the decimated forests, the filthy strip-mining towns, and the desolate native tribes is haunting. The mystery aboard ship unravels at a suspenseful pace, and while everyone must work together to insure their survival, Jake emerges a hero. A first-rate adventure about greed, mutual dependence, and family.

    im a student reading this book for my EOG prep. it is an ok book so far. we have only read to chapter 6, we just started it the other day. i heard that a boat that he is on is blown up even before the adventure begins! it sounds like one of those books that are slow to begin with and then spead up as it continues!! thanks so much for this book!! i hope the class enjoys it and so do ther people that read it!!

    Jaguar, By Albert V.

    The book was Jaguar and the author was Roland Smith.A person named Jake Lansa mad at his father beacuse he told him to take care of a retiement home with his grandfhather.His father a wildlife biologist is called to a field project in Brazil.Jake gose to Brazil to join his father.After a mysturious accident kills the expittion leader.The group cantact with a indian who helps the take a family of jaguars to the remote reigion where a refuge is supposde to be established. But the place can`t protect the animmals from human greed danger lurk in the jungle. Jake gets attacked before the jorney.At the end Jake is a hero. The main conflict iterasted me becuase Jake gets attacked before the adventure even begins and he goes to Brazil and gets lost. The authorwas first person becuase inthe story he included I or I was. The author knows words that are hard to pronounce.The author put all 5 parts of plot. This book was fantastist I give it a 6 out of 6 becuase it sometimes makes you feel like you were rithg in the book. I think that the book to include more action to make it really good.

    The Giant Cat

    The summary of the book I read called Jaguar is basically: A kid named Jake gets left at a retirement home because his dad went to Manaus for a Jaguar preserve. Then he gets a fax to come to Manaus. When he gets their there is a guy that wants Jake to follow him. They got to the ware house and waited for his dad to get their. Jake and his dad had a fight Jake was furious. The boat to go upriver blew up. Jake finds out a guy with a scar is following the boat. The rest is for you to find out. I liked this book because they go through an adventure using teamwork to get through everything.

    THE BEST BOOK EVER!

    When Jake's father had a field project to go to in Manaus for a jaguar preserve, Jake is to be with his grandfather Taw and stay there for a month (as his father says it will only be that long). But plans change and his father has been down there for a while now, and he finally invites Jake up the Manaus for his Spring Vacation. But before Jake can even help with his father's big project, he gets badly injured from a jagaur! Read the adventure that goes so far down deep, it is hard to stop turning the pages!

    Jaguar

    I loved this book it was very exiting from the very beginning!!!! Jake is 14 year old kid that lived with his father. then the father had to go to kenya to do a preservation for the jaguars!!! I will defenetly recommend this book to enyone!!!

    Jaguar

    Jaguar is a book about a boy and his father.His father has to set up a Jaguar preserve. Jacob has to leave 'The Home' and go down to the preserve with his dad.Jacob's dad succesfully saves 4 Jaguars and gets the money.Jacob goes back to live with Taw at 'The Home'. This book teaches you that it pays off to be kind to animals.

    Jaguar is Awesome!

    When 14 year old Jake flies to Brazil to help his father set up a preserve for jaguars, he encounters many dangerous obsticles. It is action-packed and you won't be able to put it down!
