This is the third in the series of "Horse Diaries" books. Koda is a bay quarter horse who begins his life in the spring of 1846 with his mother in a peaceful meadow near Independence, Missouri. After a few days of exploring and gaining strength in his wobbly legs, Koda and his mother return to the herd where he meets the other horses and the humans who will be important in his life. For the next two years Koda leads a peaceful life with his young owner, Jasmine, and her family. When Jasmine's mother dies, Koda, his mother, Jasmine, and her father, set off on a 2,000 mile journey on the Oregon Trail. Simple pleasures, amusing anecdotes, and great adventures are all told from the point of view of the horse. Throughout the book, there are beautiful, realistic, black and white drawings. Young readers will not only enjoy a good, heart-warming story, simply and beautifully told, but they will absorb a fascinating chunk of American history as they read this highly recommended book. Meet the Author

Patricia Hermes is the author of more than 40 novels for children and young adults, and two nonfiction books for adults. She is a lifelong lover of horses and enjoys taking riding lessons. Although she has never owned her own horse, many horses have owned her heart. She lives in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Ruth Sanderson has illustrated books for children of all ages, including Summer Pony and Winter Pony. She lives with her family in Ware, Massachusetts, and her favorite hobby is horseback riding.

    This Book is Fantastic!

    I am in Middle School so this many not count for all kids but i thought this book was short and rushy! But a PERFECT book for children about 7-10 who love horses or adventure or both! This book gives a great description about the setting, characters, feeling of Koda ( the horse who is telling the story!)during the story, and how it makes you appreciate what you have and that you didn't live in that exact time! A great buy and is a fantastic book! The rest of the series are fantastic as well! Great Job Patricia Hermes and Ruth Sanderson!!!

    Good Book!

    This is a good book. It is probably meant for slightly below my age range, which is why I wish it were a little longer, but it is a good book, and I would recommend it to a friend, especially someone a little younger than I am.
