Overview

A classic tale that has enchanted millions of readers worldwide, Mrs. Mike brings the fierce, stunning landscape of the Great North to life—and masterfully evokes the tender, touching moments that bring a man and a woman together forever.

Recently arrived in Calgary, Alberta after a long, hard journey from Boston, sixteen-year-old Katherine Mary O’Fallon never imagined that she could lose her heart so easily—or so completely. Standing over six feet tall, with “eyes so blue you could swim in them,” Mike Flannigan is a well-respected sergeant in the Canadian Mounted Police—and a man of great courage, kindness, and humor. Together, he and his beloved Kathy manage to live a good, honest life in this harsh, unforgiving land—and find strength in a love as beautiful and compelling as the wilderness around them…

Mrs. Mike is the love story of Katherine Mary O'Fallon, a young Irish girl from Boston, and Sergeant Mike Flannigan of the Canadian Mounted Police, who is a priest, doctor and magistrate to all in the great Canadian wilderness area under his supervision. Recommended by Library Journal.

Editorial Reviews

New York Times
It is the personality of Sgt. Mike blowing through this account like a clear breeze that gives it a refreshing quality. Everyone's dream of a cop, he was also a romantic and understanding husband, the fondest of fathers; a man of honor and humor.

    the best book

I started reading this book as a teenager and have read it almost yearly in the last thirty five years. I went to Grouard this summer but could find nothing about Mrs. Mike. I continue to search for more information about this family. It is a wonderful book.

Like so many others, I first read Mrs. Mike when I was a young teenager, about 1970 or so, and fell in love with it. It was an old book then, having been first published in 1947. I read it many times, until somewhere along the line I lost my copy of it. Years later, I was thrilled to find another copy and read it again. I'm now 56 years old now, and still enjoy the book. Just read it again. It's like returning to an old friend. I always recommend this book to teenage girls and have yet to find one who didn't love it as well. I'm happy it seems to have become something of a classic. Even though books are always better than the movies made of them, I wish someone had made a movie of this book, so more readers would become familiar with it. You won't regret adding this book to your collection, or to that of a teenage girl near and dear to you! Heartwarming, romantic, dramatic, and bittersweet story.

    A Timeless Treasure

I first found Mrs. Mike on my grandmother's bookshelf. I read it the first time because I had nothing else to read at the moment.I have read it almost every year since then just for the sheer joy of being with Katherine as she travels to the North West Territory and womanhood. I still have my grandmother's copy, and bought a new one so that I could introduce my daughter to Katherine. She carried that copy around in her backpack and read it until it was ragged. She bought me a new copy and The Search for Joyful. Now I am impatiently waiting for it to come to the Nook. Please read this amazing book, give it to your daughters and granddaughters. It is a story of the quiet beautiful strength to be found in each of us.

    Charming, Yet Tragic

Mrs. Mike was recommended to me by a friend, and I bought it having little infomation about its contents. The romance between Katharine Mary O'Fallon and Sergeant Mike Flannigan was delightful, and some of the story's passages were most beguiling. A good deal of the story, however, candidly exposes the heart-wrenching tragidy that befell many in the Canadian wilderness.

    This book is FANTASTIC!!!!

I am almost 18 and have read the book since I was 12, I still can't put it down. I love the fact that Mike and Kathy's love was so strong it's almost like you knew them, and when someone was hurt you could feel their pain. Plus when their is humor, it is not overdone. It is such a great book to read that I recommend this book is for any age to read, well, at an age you can read.

My Mother made me read Mrs. Mike. I was Hesitant at first but as soon as I started reading I was captured. I read it in one day. If you like Jane Eyre, and Pride and Prejudice you will love the Dashing Kind and Gentle Mike. This wonderful book Captivates its audience throughout. It makes you laugh and it makes you cry but it shows you a world of troubles and how two people can make it through together.

I must have been 12 or 13 when I read this book and still list it as one of my favorites. I have read literally hundreds of books since then but this is one I'm going to buy for my 14 year old granddaughter who is just discovering the joys of reading.

    life changing

I was assigned to read this book as a seventh grader. I am now 43! I truly remember not being able to put this book down, and remember crying as I read it, over all the trials and tribulations this family went through. I am going to go get a copy to read again now that I am an adult, but I truly remember it as changing the way I looked at things, and taught me not to take things for granted. A must read for everyone!!!

    Exceptional!

I am 19 and read this book for the first just one week ago. I just happened upon it during a visit to Barnes and Nobel for some summer reading. It is a powerful story about love, life , and adventure. The characters are real and beliveable, and I fell in love with all of them.

    Great

I just finished reading the book for the 100th time just about 1 minute ago. (No Kidding)All I have to say is that this book is the best book I've ever read. (And reread)So many times have I urned for the love that my own Mike Flannigan will bring me some day, and the adventure and beauty of the Canadian wilderness. But, I must wait and let things run their course. Anyway, This is by far the best book on the face of the planet. I recommend it to anyone interested.

    It touches your heart

I found this book when I was about 12 in my grandmothers library. From the first page I loved it and it still holds a place in my heart like only a good book can. It's inspiring, heart wrenching and hilarious in all the right places.

    Mrs. Mike

This is one of the best books I have ever read! I love it! I've read it three times and know that I will enjoy reading it many more. The love stories of Katherine and Mike, and that of Oh-be-joyful and Jonathan, are as touching and romantic as any you can find. It's so real that you can feel the pain of loosing, the joy of finding, and the hopefulness felt when you learn to start over from scrap and when you figure out that it's the little things that bring the joy to life. It's touchingly sad, but it holds the joy that you so rarely find.

    Mrs. Mike

I laughed and cried a ton. It's just one of those books you can read in a day, but once you've read it you never forget about it. I cry every time I read it! Not just from sadness, but from the joy that you can practically hear, see and smell when you're read it!

So glad I visited these old friends again!

I literally can¿t remember when I read this book for the first time. What I do recall is how much I enjoyed it, although I certainly was too young to understand the romance between Katherine Mary O¿Fallon of Boston and Sgt. Mike Flannigan of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. To me it was simply a grand adventure set in the Far North, with (always a plus!) a young woman protagonist. I finished re-reading ¿Mrs. Mike¿ last night, and I know exactly why it¿s considered a classic. Everything I loved about it in my girlhood is still there, with the grand adventure even more powerful to my more realistic adult imagination ¿ but now the rest of the story is accessible to me as well. And I can only say: Magnificent! Because this is that rare and wonderful thing, a love story about women and men as they really are. The stark realism of life as Kathy and Mike face it, in a land that¿s isolated, dangerous, and at times nightmarishly brutal, makes the happiness they find together shine all the more brightly. It also gives new meaning to the phrase ¿dearly bought.¿ The same applies to the friendships Kathy finds with other women, each of whom is a memorable character in her own right. I am so glad I visited these old friends again!
