Overview

The bold new blockbuster from the New York Times bestselling author.

Born in Trinidad and living in Atlanta after a relationship gone bad, Nia Simone Bijou is an ambitious writer who has it all. Except for the one thing that'll give her the control she craves-and the power she deserves: absolute, uninhibited sexual satisfaction. Now, in the sweltering days and nights of summer, the heat is on. Nia's fantasies will become a reality-with man after man after man. She will shatter the limits of erotic love. She will open herself up to experiences she never dared before. And as her fantasies begin to spin out of control, she'll discover the unexpected price of the extreme.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Is obsession required to experience the ultimate in sexual fulfillment? Dickey searches for the answer to that question in his latest steamy romance (after Waking with Enemies) via Nia Simone Bijoux, a ghostwriter recently moved to Atlanta. A devout Anaïs Nin fan, Nia's in hot pursuit of the perfect lay. Enlivened by sometimes catchy narration ("Self-pleasuring was popcorn.... My body was telling me it needed steak"), Nia's adventures with "identical sins," twins Mark and Karl, introduce her to the dubious delights of threesomes and more, leading eventually to a showdown with Mark's wife, Jewell Stewark, a TV anchorwoman. Marred somewhat by Nia's pretentious airs (her self-involvement can be crippling to the narrative), this erotic potboiler still delivers its message that saying "yes" to pleasure can also lead to self-enlightenment. Asked in an April National Public Radio interview whether his latest novel, about a ghostwriter pursuing pleasure and exploring sex while avoiding overwhelming relationships, fit into the literary, romance, erotica, or pornography genres, New York Times best-selling author Dickey (Waking with Enemies) replied, "Probably all." Though some listeners may be put off by the graphic descriptions of Nia's sexual encounters, Susan Spain's (Satin Nights) emotionally nuanced reading successfully translates the book to audio format. Recommended primarily for urban libraries with Dickey fans. [Audio clip available through library.brillianceaudio.com; the Dutton hc, released in April, is currently an Essence best seller.-Ed.]

Kirkus Reviews
Dickey (Waking with Enemies, 2007, etc.) shifts focus to pure erotica, peeping in at a beautiful, frustrated woman anxious to explore her deepest desires. Fresh from breaking up with a lover who refuses to believe it's over, writer Nia Simone Bijou is ready for some no-holds-barred, commitment-free sex. She thinks she's found it with a pair of identical, constantly competing twins, a married real-estate developer and a single erotic photographer. Nia tries to keep it simple-well, as simple as it can be with two men in the same bed-but complications (particularly the photographer's bisexual female client, who's crushing on Nia, and the developer's unsettlingly angry wife, a locally famous newscaster) insist on intruding. Readers in search of steamy, kinky sex scenes in various locations and combinations will probably be happy with what they find here. The problem is that Dickey is clearly aiming for something more profound, an emotional and spiritual release as rich as the many physical releases Nia experiences. That doesn't happen. Nia is a bundle of incompletely realized attitudes, not a person. Supposedly she's an intellectual with a fierce regard for grammar, but her first-person narration (overstuffed with references intended to indicate how well-read she is) is riddled with sentence fragments and grammatical errors. The reader is meant to admire her for assuming a role that she believes only men claim: someone who seeks pleasure without guilt and without implying commitment, but instead, she comes across as petty and selfish-a narcissistic little girl who has had the good fortune to get lost in a candy store. And unfortunately, her faults aren't interesting, or real, enough to makeher a true villain. Will leave you hot and bothered, but mentally unsatisfied.

Meet the Author

Eric Jerome Dickey
Eric Jerome Dickey
Eric Jerome Dickey is a New York Times bestselling author.

Biography

Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and earned a degree in computer system technology. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering.

After landing a job in the aerospace industry working as a software developer, Dickey's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. He soon began working the local and national comedy circuit. In the early 1990s the aerospace industry took a downward turn and Dickey found himself "downsized," but took this as an opportunity to embark on a writing career.

Having written several scripts for his personal comedy act, Dickey started writing poetry and short stories. He joined the IBWA (International Black Writers and Artists), participated in their development workshops, and became a recipient of the IBWA SEED Scholarship to attend UCLA's creative writing classes. In 1994 his first published short story, "Thirteen," appeared in the IBWA's River Crossing, Voices of the Diaspora: An Anthology of the International Black Experience. A second short story, "Days Gone By," was published in the magazine A Place to Enter.

With those successes behind him, Dickey decided to fine-tune some of his earlier work and developed a screenplay called Cappuccino. Cappuccino was directed and produced by Craig Ross Jr. and appeared in coffeehouses around the Los Angeles area. In February 1998, Cappuccino made its local debut during the Pan African Film Festival at the Magic Johnson Theater in Los Angeles and is currently on the film festival circuit.

Dickey's book-signing tours for Sister, Sister, Friends and Lovers, and Milk in My Coffee took him coast to coast and helped propel these novels to No. 1 on the Blackboard bestsellers List. His books have been featured in many publications, including Essence magazine and USA Today, and have appeared on the bestseller lists of The Los Angeles Times, Blackboard, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Dickey has appeared as a guest on many television shows, including BET's Our Voices and CNN's Sunday Morning Live.

    Unexpected Erotica

EJD is so talented. So many writers can get pigeon holed into one style of writing or plot, but EJD although he has a signature style, has so many layers, so well traveled and so demonstrative. I thought Pleasures was unlike any other EJD books. It stands on it's own. It is NOT a repeat or a continuation. I liked that EJD stepped out of his comfort zone and wrote something uninhibited and powerfully sexy! Pleasures kept me interested, entertained, and aroused. This book is for open-minded readers that enjoy the intrigue and exploration of female sensuality. Caution this book is for the Grown and Sexy, not for the cold and stiff.

    Pleasure is a Erotica

This book will have you walking around feeling funny inside, the details are so explict. It's as if I were a fly on the wall, Pleasure is an sexy and seductive novel that most women only fantasize about. It's full of sex and romance in such an taboo way. Pleasure also has a twist at the end that will through you for a loop, if your like me you'll have to reread it just to make sure your read what you just thought you read. The book end okay kinda left me wondering....I would recommend you purchase this book if your into sexy, romantic taboo's with some DRAMA!!!

    Save Your Money

I have heard goodnthungs about ejd and always wanted to grab one of his books so i did. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED! I am seriously afraid of buying one of his books a gain. This book was bad. Im not one to bash books because i like all reads. Please believe me. I felt like i was reading th same jibberish over and over. I skipped a lot of pages. It literally felt like justa book he decided ti put a lot if his personal interests in. I didnt feel like i was reading fiction. I felt like i was reading the authors diary.

Where the plot was supposed to be electrifying it was only predictable. Bad. I guessed everything. It was not good at all. The main character i barely liked. The whole story just ugh!! I inly finished because i figutred it would get better at some point. But nope!! It was a DRAAAAAAAAAG! Literallu skipped like twenty pages towards the end, the end is supposed to be the best. That my fellow reader ahoukd speak for itself.

    Whomp! Whomp! Whomp! :(

I was anticpating crazy lust-filled thoughts! I wanted to not be able to focus for a week because this book was so good, but I was able to focus on my normal life. This was a dissapointment. I've read pretty mech all of EJD's books, he is a very good story teller and has a unique way of writing & perspective. His books are like a roller coaster sometimes they are wonderful then there are those times when its like "huh". EJD is still a good author, you just should not get your hopes up for this book.

    An average read

This was the first book that I read from Eric Jerome Dickey. It was not what I expected. It was more of a Zane style of writing. I have heard that his writing stlye is a lot different than what I have read from Pleasure. I have another book that he has written but have not read. I'm looking forward to the other side of Eric Jerome Dickey.

    My My

I always pick up a book that has Eric Jerome Dickey's name on it ever since I read Between Lovers and Cheaters. I have to say that Pleasure has to be the BEST book I have read thus far from Mr. Dickey. The characters seem so real and its so easy for me to follow along because he paints such a vivid and accurate picture. The research has definately paid off. I'm very impressed with the language and especially the main character. She is a female Gemini writer such as myself. I'm impressed with the accuracy of her thought process and her inner desires. I have no doubt that women that share the same zodiac sign will appreciate her and see we're not air headed two faced creatures. Though it is a fiction novel all good stories have a hint of truism in every chapter. I look forward to reading the next series of books and will definately add this one to the collection.

    Pleasure Uninhibited...

I'm a major fan of EJD, each novel is an unfamiliar adventure. I can appreciate Pleasure because of its mental eroticisms and Karma Sutra exploits. I cannot think of a single author who in so many ways allows the characters to share in pure bliss as the ones created by Dickey. It's refreshing to read novels that express freedom coupled with flaming uninhibitedness. Thanks Eric for consistently offering me an adventurous and metaphysical magic carpet ride. Food for thought: in order to fully experience an EJD novel one must remain completely open at the top evolving within a consciousness of higher and even higher possibilities!

I want my own set of TWINS!!

When I tell you this book is what THAT is...Baby, it is EXACTLY what that is! Pure Pleasure! I love EJD, and all of his books, but this has to be my favorite. I am a woman with a strong sexual appetite, desires and fantasies that most wouldnt admit to having. So KUDOS to Mr. Dickey for putting it out there. This was a fictional book, but for me, it was a How-To guide. How to be a woman who's open-minded, who can seperate sex and love, and who can accept herself for enjoying what is meant to enjoy. I want my own set of twins!!!

I expected more from Eric Jerome Dickey

I am an avid reader of Eric Jerome Dickey, and I expected alot more from this book. Yes, it is written in traditional 'Dickey' style with his occassional peppering of literary terminology and geographical references but in terms of the plot, the book is weak. It is filled with gratuitous sex, and shallow mannerisms that made me gag. I am on page 250, and I am finding this book difficult to complete, unlike the other 7 EJD books I have read. I think that EJD wrote the main character, who is female, in the voice of a male, and I think he was too subjective in forming this book. I still love EJD as a writer, but I definitely think he dropped the proverbial ball with this one.

    It was OK...

It was okay to read. It's not my cup of tea but interesting to read about someone else's wants and desires. Other reviews stated Nia was brave to explore her sexual desires. I say Nia was gender confused. She sabotage her own happiness with the choices she made. I wish it had a better ending, but I guess that's life.

    Can't recommend

Huh, where can I begin with the disappointment, I love Eric Jerome Dickey and probably will still buy more books in the future but this was a true let down for me. This was basically a porno told from a "hypocrite, arrogant, confused, and promiscuous woman" point of view. the sex scenes were steamy and detailed but unless you are deeply into porn I would NOT recommend. Nia turned out to be the MOST annoying character I have ever read about. The ending was lacking and some scenes in this book just didn't make any sense to me. Took a while to get into at the beginning.

    Disappointed...

This was the first book I read from this author, and it is safe to say I will not be reading any more of his work.

There were so many things I did not like about this book, I am not even sure where to begin. First, I guess, would be the author's writing style. It seemed to be a bunch of disjointed thoughts with very rarely complete sentences. Then there were the way too overused bad analogies.

This book and writing style are just not for me.
