Overview

The return of a long lost Clan . . .

Many moons ago, five warrior Clans shared the forest in peace. But as Twolegs encroached on the cats' territories, the warriors of SkyClan were forced to abandon their home and try to forge a new life far away. Eventually, the Clan disbanded—forgotten by all until Firestar was sent on a quest to reunite its descendants and return SkyClan to its former glory.

Now, with Leafstar in place as leader, SkyClan is thriving. Leafstar is desperate to believe that her Clan will survive where the ancient SkyClan cats failed. But threats continue to plague the Clan, and as dissent grows from within, Leafstar must face the one question she dreads: Is SkyClan meant to survive?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Years ago, the warrior cats of SkyClan were forced from their forest home to make a new life in a gorge far from encroaching "two-legs." Starvation, sickness, and ferocious rats eventually led the Clan to disband entirely. Not until the current cats of the gorge met a traveler named Firestar did they learn about their ancestors' history. Now, they are determined that SkyClan will live again, with newly anointed Leafstar as their leader. Despite her best efforts, Leafstar must deal with challenges that no clan leader has faced previously, such as the inclusion of "daylight warriors"—disparagingly referred to as "kitty warriors" by some—who spend days with the clan and nights as "kittypets" under the care of two-legs. Even more troublesome are three cats from afar who arrive suddenly, asking to learn about Clan ways, but who seem to be after more than just lessons on the Warrior Code. With her clan infighting and her deputy making troublesome alliances with the foreign warriors, Leafstar can only wonder...is SkyClan doomed to fail again? This book will appeal to fans of Hunter's other stories in the "Warriors" series, but it also differs from her previous focus on Clan tensions in its exploration of self-doubt, trust, and loyalty. Young readers will appreciate the distinctive personalities with which Hunter embodies each of her characters, as well as the exciting episodic narrative, which makes this large book ideal for reading in smaller, more manageable increments. Reviewer: Cara Chancellor
School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Hunter continues the series with this book that unveils the future of the new Skyclan. Leafstar is uncertain of her leadership abilities. Though the Clan chose her to lead the mixed pack of cats that make up Skyclan, she wonders if her decision to include kittypets and Twolegs is weakening it. When Sharpclaw, her deputy, begins to keep information from her and override her authority, she questions whether she can trust him. Then there's the growing affection between Leafstar and Billystorm, a day warrior who lives between two worlds. When the Twolegs ask for the Clan's help to defeat their enemies and free their homeland, Leafstar must rely on Starclan to give her direction and wisdom to make a choice that might endanger them all. The author continues to generate interest in these cats and their battle to survive in the wild. The characters are skillfully developed, with a range of emotions and thoughts that draw readers into their dilemmas. Hunter provides a satisfying conclusion where the traits of maturity, compassion, loyalty, and strength are upheld as desirable. She demonstrates through Leafstar that being a leader does not require coercion or bullying but that humility and relying on others is vital to the welfare of all. The manga at the end is an added bonus, providing a mini-adventure in cartoon form. "Warriors" aficionados will bury their noses in this super volume and won't emerge until they have whetted their appetites for the next installment with the sample chapters at the end of the book.—Debra Banna, Sharon Public Library, MA

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter
Erin Hunter

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    1. Also Known As:
Erin Hunter is the pseudonym for three writers: Cherith Baldry, Kate Cary, and Victoria Holmes
    2. Hometown:
All three writers live in the U.K.

    Flameflower

    * SPOILER ALERT*( IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE WHOLE SERIES DO NOT READ)

Hey, I have read every book of the series so far.

My name is Flameflower. I am a she-cat, and I have had three kits today. Their names are Honeykit, Firekit, and Snowkit.

This is tied in with Firestar's Quest, if you have read it. Did you ever notice that the books' cover had the same color but switched? If you have, good for you. Bluestar's Prophecy and Crookedstar's Promise has the same thing, except different colors.

The Last Hope, which just came out, tells terrible things that happen. Firestar dies, and so does Hollyleaf, Mousefur, and Ferncloud. It's so sad.

The fourth cat is Firestar, but they never said the whole prophecy. The full prophecy is:

" There will be three, kin of your kin, with the power of the stars in their paws. They will find a fourth, and the battle between light and dark will be won. A new leader will rise from the shadows of his death, and the Clans will survive beyond the memories of his memories. This is how it has always been, and how it will always be."

It's a bit long, but it does make sence. Firestar died, and the "a new leader" is Bramblestar. Everyone should always remember Firestar, the fire who saved the Clan. He was a worthy warrior, even he wasn't Clanborn. He saved all the Clans at least once. He shouldn't have died, but he saved the Clans by killing Tigerstar. And he killed Brokenstar, the evil Dark Forest leader.

It wasn't Firestar who saved every cat, though. Hawkfrost put Ivypool's life at risk two times and Hollyleaf saved her the first time. She died saving Ivypool, and no one will forget her for saving Ivypool.

It wasn't only Firestar who saved the Clans. Bramblestar saved the Clans by killing Hawkfrost. Ivypool may have helped, but Bramblestar saved her when Hawkfrost was just about to kill Ivypool. He slammed himself against Hawkfrost and bit down hard on Hawkfrost's neck. Then Hawkfrost collapsed and died.

    The Four were:
    Jayfeather: medicine cat, blind
    Lionblaze: warrior
    Dovewing: warrior
    Firestar: leader( died)

    Their powers:
Jayfeather: can walk into other cats' dreams
Lionblaze: can fight without getting hurt
Dovewing: can see, hear, and scent very far away things
Firestar: unknown, most likely can save the clans

Thanks for reading this! There are always other books, but SkyClan really breaks the warrior code( Billystorm, Harveymoon, etc.) I really hope you like the facts I brought up for The Last Hope!!!
