Editorial Reviews

About.com Guide to Knitting
An ideal choice for new spinners.
Knitting News
5 out of 5 stars. This is an excellent book for anyone who is thinking about learning to spin or who already has a spindle or wheel.
Spindle and Wheel
This book is one of the best beginner books on spinning I have ever read . . . even the experienced spinner will learn quite a lot by reading it.
KLIATT
As knitting and crocheting have grown in popularity, artists are increasingly turning to creating their own yarn to add more personal touches to their projects. Maggie Casey walks readers through the spinning process, beginning with an introduction about the various types of fibers available, how to choose and prepare fibers for spinning, and detailed instructions on how to use a spindle. Maggie shows how to spin on a variety of different spinning wheels so no matter which one you may use, you will feel comfortable spinning yarn. A special chapter on using handspun yarn provides essential information on wraps per inch, measuring yarn for projects and size of yarn. Maggie Casey is the co-owner of Shuttles, Spindles and Skeins in Boulder, Colorado. She has been addicted to spinning for 30 years and has taught at guilds and wool festivals throughout the United States. This is a fantastic beginner's book. Reviewer: Shirley Reis
Library Journal

Handspinning is the next logical step for weavers, knitters, or crocheters looking to expand the creative possibilities of their craft. Casey, who has 35 years of spinning experience and holds a Handweavers Guild of America Certificate of Excellence in Handspinning, here writes for the beginning handspinner, though she also includes many techniques that will interest the experienced spinner (e.g., how to make a nonslip leader, that is, the yarn used to begin the spinning process; and how to ply from a spindle using the "flowerpot plying" technique). Her clear explanations of the differences among various fiber types and the close-up photos elucidating processes like predrafting and using a niddy-noddy further enhance this excellent introduction to the craft, which is highly recommended for public libraries.

    Learning from the master

Maggie Casey presents a very old and classic tool for making the yarns you wish to spin for the knitting/weaving/crocheting project you have in mind. She has a wonderful demeanor and provides you with the inspiration to take that leap to "the dark side" of our society. The side that finds comfort and happiness in creating their own clothing.

    Makes Spinning Approachable

A very inviting and unintimidating book, Maggie Casey coaches the reader with gentle kindness through the process of hand spinning with a spindle as well as with a wheel. Her encouraging words instill a desire to study her clear photo demonstrations and truly learn this almost forgotten craft of our fore-mothers. This author has taken the 'scary' out of spinning and made it approachable.
