Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Michener's latest combination of mam moth research, history, and fiction ex udes all the color, courage, villainy, vi olence, and independent spirit expect ed from the Lone Star state. The book's organizing principle is a governor's task force created to study the state. It is composed of stereotypical Texans: oil man, rancher, genteel descendant of Southern aristocracy, Chicano, etc. Their ancestors are Texasevery one an adventurer, from a Spanish mission ary to Scots-Irish and Germans hungry for land and freedom, to a minister sent to civilize Comanches, to Mexican ban dits and Texas Rangers. Interspersed among these sagas are task force meet ings in various Texas cities to study lo cal geography and natural historya far more accessible approach than pre vious Michener tomes that lump them in heavy opening chapters. Purists may object to the overabundance of dramat ic incidents, but they make exciting reading. Highly recommended. Cyn thia Johnson Wheall er, Cary Memorial Lib., Lexington, Mass.

    more from this reviewer

A bit dated but worth a read

Michener's Texas manages to capture the spirit of Texas with an interesting interplay between history, the fictional characters he places within this history, and a fictional "Task Force" of current Texans chosen by the Governor to review Texas history education for the school system. Michener sympathetically presents different groups and viewpoints throughout the time periods and how these past conflicts and periods underlay subsequent developments.

    What a Book!

For anyone wanting to understand what makes Texans think they way they do, well, this book is for you. As a transplanted Texan I wanted to know what has created the Texas attitude and this book answers all my questions. After reading this and many other Michener novels I wish that he was still with us to captivate us as he did in the past

    TEXAS AT IT'S BEST..........

JAMES MICHENER HAS DONE A WONDERFUL JOB OF BRINGING TEXAS HISTORY TO US IN A VERY COLORFUL AND INTERESTING WAY. THIS IS A BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT TEXAS IS ALL ABOUT. THE DIFFERENT FAMILIES AND THEIR STORIES AS SO WELL DEPLICTED THE ONE FEELS THEY ARE LOOKING AT THE EVENTS OF THE PAST FROM ON HIGH. IT IS A LONG BOOK, BUT YOU DON'T NOTICE ITS LENGTH BECAUSE IT IS HARD TO PUT DOWN. THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW YOU A HALF WAY THROUGH IT AND WANTING MORE.

    Great Historical Fiction

I loved this book. Received as a gift and took me six months or so to start reading since I was intimidated by the number of pages. Once I started I loved it and it read quick since Michner keeps you interested with this story.
