Overview

The secret history of the New York Times bestselling Ranger's Apprentice

Unconfirmed accounts of a group of Araluen warriors - tales of adventure, battle, and triumph over evil - have spread for centuries throughout the known world. Most notable is a clan shrouded in mystery, phantom warriors known as the Rangers.

Two names pass the lips of every storyteller: Halt, and his apprentice, Will. They and their comrades in arms are said to have traveled throughout the kingdom and beyond its borders, protecting those who needed it most. If true, these rumors can be only part of the story.

Only now, centuries after these men and women walked the earth, do we have confirmation of their existence. Behold The Lost Stories.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

The ten Ranger's Apprentice novels of Australian author John Flanagan have riveted the attention of hundreds of thousands of readers, many of whom, not surprisingly, have questions about characters and events not fully fleshed out in these resonant fantasies. In response to letters and online questions, Flanagan now opens the gateways to "lost" stories that fill in missing pieces of the Ranger's Apprentice canvas. A most welcome postscript to a scintillating series.

School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up—A wood and brass chest, unearthed during an excavation of the ancient kingdom of Araluen, contains manuscripts authenticating the existence of the Rangers, who had merely been legend. These lost stories weave a thread through events and characters from previous titles in the series. The collection opens with Ranger Halt divulging to his apprentice, Will, how he came to be his mentor. Years before, he was saved in battle by a young sergeant named Daniel, who, in his last breath, asked Halt to look out for his wife and a son—a baby named Will. In another chapter a young Ranger, Gilan, takes on Halt's search for a coldhearted killer when Halt is exiled for insulting King Duncan. Animals are keen and well-developed characters throughout the series and this volume is no exception. In one story, Will's dog, Ebony, is stolen by Roamers training fight dogs for sport and, in another, Flanagan pulls heartstrings with the bittersweet retirement of Will's horse, Tug. More sentimentality and bits of humor are shown as Flanagan's leading men find their mates and settle down. Halt's masculine demeanor is softened by Pauline and, as Will prepares a speech for the marriage of his best friend, Horace, readers will also be rooting for his union with Alyss. Author notes at the beginning of each chapter explain how readers' questions often prompted the stories. While those unfamiliar with the earlier books will enjoy the adventurous tales on their own merit, Lost Stories will be most satisfying for diehard fans reluctant to say goodbye to the series.—Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY

Meet the Author

John Flanagan
John Flanagan

John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia hoping to be a writer. It wasn’t until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency he worked, however, that his talent was revealed. It turned out one of the company directors agreed with John’s assessment of the executive, and happily agreed to train John in copywriting.

After writing advertising copy for the next two decades, John teamed with an old friend to develop a television sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went on to air for eight years.

John began writing Ranger’s Apprentice for his son, Michael, ten years ago, and is still hard at work on the series. He currently lives in the suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. In addition to their son, they have two grown daughters and four grandsons.

    Can't Wait!

An email I sent to Mr. Flanagan is the basis for a short story in this novel. It explains how Foldar ( one of Morgarath's lieutennants ) was captured by Gilan after Halt left with Horace for Skandia. I can't wait to finally read this novel!

    John Flanagan does it again!!!!!

I was so sad when the Ranger's Apprentice stories ended because I felt as if I had lost my best friends. The way Flanagan brings us more stories without actually making it a part of the series, is brilliant! When I read the book, I felt as if I were sitting down with my old friends again, but this time, Flanagan lets you know that the characters are gone. This book taught me extra things about my friends and I loved Flanagan for giving me another glimpse of them. Highly recommend!!!!!!!

    God i cant wait.

So many memories with ranger's apprentice, most of which have to do with taking my brother's copies, hiding in the bathroom and reading a few page when i had time. Good times.

    Cool

I loved this collection of short stories. I was a little disappointed when I found out that book ten was going to be his last full novel in the Rangers Apprentice series but this book really tied up a few of the loose ends. If you like adventure books check this out.

^^ Nice little closer to the series

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, I had always wondered what exactly they did with the horses when they got too old. All the other tales were quite good and purple prose had me giggling. The only thing I didn't like was the archeological dig. Found that a little cheesy.

    more from this reviewer

    for Ranger's Apprentice fans

Great book to read covering the little detail of gaps throughout the ten book series...and details on Halt's Mentor, and tiny things we (Ranger's Apprentice) readers/fans would like to know...Thank you John Flanagan and to those who helped him by asking him the questions about Gilan, and about Tug's age.
