This story has everything: character who jump off the page, clearer than life, and the best description of a ship and her crew enduring a terrific storm. My favorite Conrad.

Conrad's masterpiece chronicles the doomed voyage of a steamer in the Indian ocean. It is full of excitement and danger, but is most successful in its portrayal of the personalities and struggles of the captain and his mate. Of all of Conrad's works, this is my favorite.

Overview
Conrad's tale of life at sea follows steamship captain Tom Macwhirr—a man never afraid of the high seas’ monstrous storms. But this time he meets a storm with which his ship may not be able to compete. Macwhirr’s complex personality a combination of courage and foolishness is brought to bear on his battles with the ocean.
