From the author of the landmark bestseller What’s the Matter with Kansas?, a jaw-dropping investigation of the decades of deliberate—and lucrative—conservative misrule
In his previous book, Thomas Frank explained why working America votes for politicians who reserve their favors for the rich. Now, in The Wrecking Crew, Frank examines the blundering and corrupt Washington those politicians have given us.
Casting back to the early days of the conservative revolution, Frank describes the rise of a ruling coalition dedicated to dismantling government. But rather than cutting down the big government they claim to hate, conservatives have simply sold it off, deregulating some industries, defunding others, but always turning public policy into a private-sector bidding war. Washington itself has been remade into a golden landscape of super-wealthy suburbs and gleaming lobbyist headquarters—the wages of government-by-entrepreneurship practiced so outrageously by figures such as Jack Abramoff.
It is no coincidence, Frank argues, that the same politicians who guffaw at the idea of effective government have installed a regime in which incompetence is the rule. Nor will the country easily shake off the consequences of deliberate misgovernment through the usual election remedies. Obsessed with achieving a lasting victory, conservatives have taken pains to enshrine the free market as the permanent creed of state.
Stamped with Thomas Frank’s audacity, analytic brilliance, and wit, The Wrecking Crew is his most revelatory work yet—and his most important.
Frank paints a complex and conspiracy-ridden picture that illuminates the sinister and controversial practices of the Republican party in the 20th and 21st centuries. While Frank's assessments and interpretations of key events, players and party doctrines is accurate and justifiable, his overwhelming blame of the Republican Party as the source of everything that's wrong with this county and as the emblem of self-destructing government denies the Democrats and the citizenry their roles in a decaying democracy. Wyman's matter-of-fact delivery hints at the obviousness of Frank's words, but provides enough enthusiasm to make listeners believe he, too, is invested in Frank's message. His emphasis and vigor keep the text enjoyable, long after the rant of Republican despotism has become excessive. A Metropolitan Books hardcover (Reviews, May 26). (Aug.)

Thomas Frank reveals how conservatives promote their agenda and leave the population wondering why things never improve in Washington and continue to get worse. I always felt things were financially driven in Washington but thought conservatives were more fiscally responsible. Well they were, for themselves. Thomas Frank really uncovered the business model and theme used to unravel government and favor business at the citizens expense. A really good read, full of details and documented facts.

The followers of this ideology are the "wreaking crew." They are as extreme on the right as the "everything owned and run by the state" Communists. Liberals are actually between these extremes, knowing that some economic functions should be privatized and others government-run. In fact the Chinese now hold the economic future of this nation in their hands thanks to the libertarian promotion of "free trade" that's created an over $700B yearly "trade" deficit, which has undermined wages and led to the selling off of this country. The wreck is because the "free market" god demonstrably fails, yet they want more of the same. On how it fails, google "Invisible Hand Drops Ball & Economics 101". Tragic. Thanks to Thomas Frank for detailing the devastation and its causes.

This one certainly did that. I was raised a Democrat, converted to Republican in my 30s and now at 52 I am an unabashed Ultra-Libertarian. Far be it from me to join a party that may actually have control of this mess.
Like the books by conservative Ann Coulter, this one is just another one of the ranters only from the left. While I certainly don't agree with Mr. Frank's views, it is well-researched and a fun read. And as previously stated, it got my blood boiling a few times and that is a good thing.
While we fight among ourselves over which side has the lowest IQ or is the most evil, we are leaving the backdoor unguarded as the Chinese slip inside. This should be the topic for Mr. Frank and Ms Coulter's next book. Michael L. Gooch, SPHR

A factual and revealing book on the self-destructing conservative mentality running this country. This should be standard reading for any political book club.

This is probably one of the most incisive political books of recent years with immense relevance to our current crisis. Frank meticulously details how successive conservative governments dating back to Reagan have deliberately emasculated and debased the US government, ensuring that government would become less and less effective while carrying on deficit spending at a rate that ensures that "liberal" administrations, when elected, no longer have the means to put their idealism into practice. The essence of "conservative government" consists in doing the will of business - labor and environmental protection laws written in the 60s and 70s were reversed or simply allowed to atrophy by hostile heads of departments like James Watt at Interior. At the same time, government became riddled with money politics, an ever-expanding lobbyist community working on behalf of (and themselves making immense profits from) big money interests which took over, through outsourcing or indirect control, government functions they were completely unqualified to perform.
The book is written in a highly readable, fast-paced style with numerous entertaining anecdotes concerning the various shady characters making up the neocon "fringe" - which turns out to be far less "fringe" than commonly believed. Like a good "Whodunit" I could not put it down as the saga of the eroding power of the average working citizen in the world's most powerful democracy continued to unfold. Amazingly, given its topicality, this fine book was on sale in my local B&N for just $4.98. A must-read for every thoughtful citizen who is concerned about America's future - though it will not convert the hard-core targets it demasks, anyone who believes in "compassionate conservatism" who is truly open-minded will find in it cause for reflection. As the author says in his introduction, "we shall gaze upon one of the true marvels of history: democracy buried beneath an avalanche of money."
