5 Picture Books That Will Make Parents Laugh, Too

I’m not going to lie. I play favorites. No, not with my children, though the one who sleeps later is definitely a contender. I play favorites when it comes to picture books. I want to laugh. I want to read a book that makes me crack up even more than it does my children. Maybe it has little details that only grown-ups will understand, or maybe the illustrations are more entertaining than I could even imagine in my mind.
For that reason, I count these five books as some of my favorite picture books that fill our family reading time with side-splitting laughter for everyone. (Especially the adults.)

Dragons Love Tacos, by Adam Rubin and Daniel Salmieri
Taco night takes on a whole new meaning after reading this book. Parents will crack up at all the inside jokes and innuendos throughout, and kids will love the hilarious illustrations of dragons at costume parties and pool parties and playing charades. And everyone will love seeing what really happens when you give dragons the one thing they should never eat—spicy salsa!

Diary of a Worm, by Doreen Cronin and Harry Bliss
A worm who imagines himself as a secret service agent: seriously, it doesn’t get funnier than that. Oh wait, actually yes, yes it does. Because he also does the hokey-pokey, although he can’t do any more moves than just putting his head in. Kids will love seeing the trouble this feisty worm dreams of getting into, and parents will appreciate not only the humor, but the inspiring message about everyone having their place in the world.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, by Mo Willems
If you haven’t read Mo Willems’ stories to your children, you are in for a treat. From his Pigeon books to his famous Elephant and Piggie series, these simple, yet drily hilarious stories feature relatable characters who will make children and their parents howl with laughter. The best part is that Willems makes you a part of the story by breaking the third wall and posing questions directly to the reader—making us feel like we are all in on the joke, and part of the comedy act! For example, in Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Willems’ avian antihero begs readers to please just let him drive the bus, giving kids the chance to tell him exactly why that’s a bad idea.

The Monster at the End of the Book, by Jon Stone
Even when my children no longer watched Sesame Street, they still asked me to read this book to them over and over again. It’s entertaining for kids because they love to break the rules and turn the page after Grover begs and pleads with them not to. Parents will crack up at the lovable muppet’s sarcasm and dry sense of humor. This one is a timeless classic that still brings laughter to all ages.

Mustache Baby, by Bridget Heos andJoy Ang
Come on, a mustache on a baby? Are you serious? Of course we aren’t: And that’s why it is so hilarious. The idea that a baby could be born with a mustache is amusing to both children and adults, especially when that mustache begins to curl and leads little Billy into a life of toddler crime. A massively entertaining depiction of good vs. evil, this is definitely a book that will amuse parents just as much, if not more, than their children.
