6 Signs You’re Excited for the New Magnus Chase Novel!

Magnus Chase is back—almost! You still have just a bit longer to wait for the October 3 release of The Ship of the Dead, the third installment in the thrilling Rick Riordan series all about once-homeless teen/now one of Odin’s chosen warriors, Magnus Chase.
With the help of his friends Hearthstone the elf, Blitzen the dwarf, and Samirah the Valkyrie, Magnus has managed incredible feats thus far, including defeating Fenris Wolf and battling giants for Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. But now Magnus is up against his most dangerous challenge yet. And like you, we are crazy-excited for this book to be in our hot little hands already.

You keep hitting refresh on the pre-order page in hopes that the gods have smiled down upon you and moved up the release date. Sorry, guys, the book doesn’t hit shelves till Oct. 3. But you’ve made it this long! You’re almost there! Of course, if you keep wanting to try to get in the gods’ good graces to push that date up a wee bit, we won’t complain.

Every time you hear someone say “low-key,” you hyperventilate a little because you thought they said, “Loki.” Yes, Loki, the wily trickster god you love to hate, plays a big role in this latest book. He’s free of his chains and is prepping Naglfar, the Ship of the Dead, with a host of giants and zombies to sail into battle against the gods of Asgard, thus beginning the final battle of Ragnarok. And it’s up to Magnus and his pals to sail across the oceans of Midgard, Jotunheim, and Niflheim and face angry sea gods, giants, and a fire-breathing dragon to stop Loki.
Speaking of Loki—make that, low-key—you’ve been low-key stalking Rick Riordan’s Twitter feed. The author of the Magnus Chase books, Percy Jackson books, and so many other of your faves is all about giving us hints and tidbits about his latest work and our favorite characters on Twitter. So yes, we’ve all been hanging on his every tweet waiting for more info about The Ship of the Dead.
You’ve been brainstorming potential ship names for Magnus and Alex all over the front of your notebooks. Riordan tweeted his own input on a ship name for this couple that many fans are rooting for—”How about Beatrice? That’s a lovely name.” Even still, Fierrochase seems to be the fave for referring to this duo that we hope to see a lot more of in The Ship of the Dead.

You reserved the back of your notebooks for doodling “Blitzen + Hearthstone #relationshipgoals.” Speaking of duos we want to see more of in this book, how about Blitzen and Hearthstone?! Yes, please. There’s always a bevy of fanfic and Tumblr posts to tide us over until we can start poring over every little interaction (please let there be a lot!) between Hearthstone the elf and Blitzen the dwarf in the latest book.
The final seven words of the series’ second book, The Hammer of Thor, uttered by none other than Annabeth Chase have been haunting your dreams: “I think it’s time you met Percy.” No, you weren’t dreaming when you read those words on the last page of book two. Percy freaking Jackson is going to meet Magnus freaking Chase in The Ship of the Dead! Oct. 3 can’t get here fast enough!
