NYCC Preview: 7 New & Upcoming Books for Your TBR Pile

New York Comic-Con is behind us, but the pop culture extravaganza gave us plenty to look forward to in the coming months—not to mention all the great reads that are available now. During the con, representatives from Harper Collins—including Harper Voyager publicist Caroline Perny, Harper Teen editor Emilia Rhodes, and Epic Reads content and community manager Margot Wood—convened to tell us all about their best titles currently on shelves, and provide previews of books coming early next year. Here are some of our favorites.
Ships in 1-2 days.
A Thousand Pieces of You, by Claudia Gray
If you like Orphan Black, Rhodes thinks you’ll love this tangled “clone club.” Marguerite Caine has a mission: to track the man who killed her father through the multiverse. Along the way, she meets a host of alternate versions of herself, leading to a massive meeting of Marguerites that Rhodes says “would make Tatiana Maslany’s head spin.”
Blood of Wonderland, by Colleen Oakes
Fans of Once Upon a Time or other retold fairy tales like Wicked may already know of Oakes’ twisted reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland. Oakes’ series continues with this third installment, on sale in January, in which Dinah finds herself framed for murder, exiled from Wonderland—and ready to launch her rebellion. “I’m editing the last book in the series now,” says Rhodes, “and heads will literally roll.”
Hunted, by Meagan Spooner
For the more French-minded fairy tale aficionado comes Spooner’s dark retelling of Beauty and the Beast, with a totally revamped “Belle” named Yeva—”a badass hunter with a battle-axe,” Wood gushes—who ventures into the forest to slay the Beast and find her missing father. Sadly, the book won’t be available until March, but interested readers can pre-order now.

My Lady Jane, by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
Wood describes this comic medieval fantasy as, “The Princess Bride meets Galavant, minus the musical numbers,” which is a pretty compelling recommendation even before you factor in a shapeshifting horse-man and a potentially deadly political conspiracy.
Queen of Blood, by Sarah Beth Durst
Fans of fantasy shows like The Shannara Chronicles and anime like Studio Ghibli’s immortal Princess Mononoke won’t want to miss Durst’s newest series, set in a world where spirits are everywhere—”and they want to kill your whole face,” warns Perny. “It made me cry on a Brooklyn subway and I didn’t even care.”
This Savage Song, by Victoria Schwab
Urban fantasy readers take note: Schwab’s latest takes place in what Wood calls “a city somehow darker than Gotham,” where violence breeds literal monsters—one of the most powerful of which is the soul-sucking August Flynn, the novel’s protagonist, who just wants to be human.
Ships in 1-2 days.
Eye of the Beholder, by Sarah Tarkoff
We’ll have to wait until April for this one, but Arrow fans will want to pre-order now—Tarkoff (who’s recently written for the show and its animated Vixen spinoff) will unveil her debut novel next year. The editors describe it as a fantasy “Harrison Bergeron” tale taking place in a world where good and evil correspond with beauty and ugliness.
