7 Sweet Comics You Need to Read After NYCC
Another New York Comic-Con has come and gone. Goodbye, sweet deals on back issues. So long, handshakes with our favorite creators. At least we received a great parting gift: announcements of some awesome new comics! This year’s con featured some incredible new books alongside drool-worthy previews. Here’s a rundown of what we saw, and what you’ll need to read to get ready.
No Mercy, Vol.1, by Alex de Campi, Carla Speed McNeil, and Jenn Manley Lee
Collecting the first four issues of this brand-spanking-new series from Image, No Mercy spins a haunting, Lord of the Flies-esque tale about a group of teenagers on a pre-college trip to Central America. When their bus crashes, the group is stranded in the punishing wilderness, exposed to the elements, coyotes—and each other. Which is worse?

Captain Marvel, Vol. 1, by Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez
At the con, Marvel announced that bestselling YA writer Shannon Hale and her husband Dean will be writing a teen-oriented Captain Marvel novel, a spinoff from DeConnick’s wildly popular reimagining of the mohawked hero, so now’s the time to get caught up on her adventures. Not only does this first volume tell you everything you need to know about the hard-punching Captain, it also guest stars Marvel’s other surprise cosmic hit: the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Injustice: Gods Among Us, Vol. 1, by Tom Taylor and Jheremy Raapack
Taylor has just been confirmed as the next scribe of the Batman/Superman title, said to explore an adventure far back in both heroes’ histories. Details on just what that will entail are scarce, but it isn’t Taylor’s first time writing about the World’s Finest Team. Then again, his versions of those characters live in the Injustice universe, where they are constantly trying to destroy one another. This one will probably be slightly more uplifting…

Spider-Gwen, Vol. 0, by Jason Latour and Robbie Rodriguez
Marvel also announced a new ongoing series to debut in 2016: Spider-Women! An ensemble book drawing on plotlines from the universe-smashing Spider-Verse event, the series will star fan favorites Spider-Woman and Silk as they visit Spider-Gwen’s alternate reality. Not sure what any of that means? You’ll want to pick up this collection, which introduces the web-slinging Gwen and her world—one in which she was unable to prevent her beloved Peter Parker’s death.
Avengers Academy, Vol. 1, by Christos Gage and Mike McKone
In a surprising turn of events, we’ll be seeing the return of cult-favorite comics from the 1980s, based on the toy lines Rom the Space Knight and Micronauts. Originally published by Marvel, IDW has picked up the rights to both series, and tapped Marvel stalwart Christos Gage to write Rom’s new adventures. If you’re not familiar with Gage’s work, start with Avengers Academy, an action-packed (but still delightfully angsty) book starring all-new teen superheroes who must come to terms with both their powers and the consequences that follow.

Jessica Jones: Alias, Vol. 1, by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos
Seems like everybody who’s remotely interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been wringing their hands waiting for Jessica Jones, the new Netflix series starring Krysten Ritter and David Tennant. NYCC attendees were lucky enough to watch the entire first episode, but if you weren’t in that select audience, grab the first volume of Bendis’ much-beloved detective series and get pumped.

Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again, by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley
No one working in superhero comics right now is more controversial than Frank Miller. After permanently changing the way we think about Batman in The Dark Knight Returns, he went on to polarize audiences with his strongly political Holy Terror. Now it seems he’s turning that knob up to 11, with the rapidly approaching third installment of his Batman saga, DKIII: The Master Race. If you didn’t know he created a sequel in the first place, check out this thoroughly bizarre story, which finds an aging Bruce Wayne waging war against the despotic Lex Luthor.
