Cozy Mysteries & Amateur Sleuths books are the perfect way to get lost in a mystery, solve the crime, AND have some fun along the way. These titles put the readers amid the action. After all, who amongst us doesn’t enjoy baking, visiting quaint remote villages and having some quiet time in a library? If you said “yes” to any or all of those then put on your detective cap; because in cozy and amateur mysteries, the authors celebrate a tight-knit community (who sometimes knit!) and all of us (the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker) as the heroes. This list is a mix of traditional cozies as well as some new happenings in the genre. Keep in mind, even though some titles are not debuts – it just means you have a whole back catalog to read AFTER you read these. And yes! It’s OK to read out of order. No spoilers here!

I would be remiss if I didn’t tip my hat to the importance of pets in Cozy/Amateur mysteries. Miranda James is the New York Times bestselling author of the Cat in the Stacks mysteries, and at #13 in the series, we have seen how a cat CAN have MORE than nine lives! Our heroes and their cat take a lovely vacation to Asheville, North Carolina. For, guess what? A mystery reader’s club at a library. Of course, things go a bit awry at the hotel, but don’t fear — remember what I just said about cats and lives.
