Disney’s Descendants Welcomes a New Class
Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos aren’t the only villainous offspring that made the transition from the Isle of the Lost (land of all the Disney bad guys and gals and their children) to the Kingdom of Auradon (land of all the good eggs) in Disney’s buzzworthy Descendants series. School of Secrets, a brand-new spinoff chapter book series, introduces readers to other kids of well-known Disney villains and follows them as they seek to answer the question, “Can the bad apple really fall far from the evil tree?”
In the new series’ first book, CJ’s Treasure Chase (August 30), Captain Hook’s daughter, CJ, has no interest in becoming an “Auradon Kid.” As the daughter of one of Disney’s most legendary baddies, CJ feels like a mischievous pirate through and through. But after she and her best friend, Freddie, daughter of Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog, are magically transported to Auradon Prep, Freddie happily enrolls as a student, while CJ becomes her secret stowaway roommate. While Freddie adapts quite well to life at Auradon Prep, CJ doesn’t plan on sticking around Auradon for long—but she has some big plans for her time there. See, CJ brought a souvenir with her from the Isle of the Lost: her father’s treasure map. It appeared incomplete on the island, where King Beast banned all magic, but CJ is sure that once she’s in Auradon, the map will reveal the rest of itself and lead her right to Captain Hook’s treasure. Of course, as she soon learns, getting to her villainous dad’s loot isn’t going to be quite that simple. And she just might have to ask for some help along the way. But when CJ is faced with choosing between friendship and fortune, will she realize she’s not as rotten to the core as her evil father? Or will her own villainy put Captain Hook’s to shame?

The short, action-packed chapters fly by as readers follow CJ all over Auradon—from Briar’s Hollow to Skull Rock—on her quest to finish the map and find Captain Hook’s hidden treasure. Descendants veterans Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos do make cameo appearances in the story, but CJ and Freddie are the real stars here. Young readers will appreciate the chance to get to know these newbies and discover how their adventures play into the new world of an integrated Auradon Prep. The book’s suspenseful action near the end will have kids flipping quickly through the pages to get to the conclusion, but what they’ll find is really more of a new beginning for both CJ and Freddie.
The next book in the chapter book series, Freddie’s Shadow Cards (October 25), focuses on Dr. Facilier’s daughter as she uses her voodoo magic to join the a capella group at Auradon Prep. But as she soon finds out, using her Shadow Cards to get her way comes with a price.
