Once Pinocchio was a wooden automaton who escaped captivity in Venice with the help of a magical girl, Lazuli, and a bevy of monsters, a story told in John Claude Bemis’s captivating novel, The Wooden Prince. In the thrilling sequel, Lord of Monsters, Pinocchio and Lazuli have inherited the kingdom of Abaton from Lazuli’s father, Prestor John, and Pinocchio has become a real boy, much to his delight. The leaders of the great Elemental houses of Abaton are doubtful that two kids can rule. Pinocchio is a bit doubtful himself, and isn’t sure how to keep his promise to the magical creatures who he left imprisoned in Venice. He will need an army to return to Italy to save them, but the inhabitants of Abaton do not want any part in bringing monsters to their land.
Pinocchio and Lazuli get their chance to show how competent they can be when Abaton comes under attack. Long ago, the evil magician Diomancer raised an army of monsters to overthrow Prestor John. Diomancer and the monsters were defeated and Prestor John put them to sleep in a hidden prison. But now some of the monsters have awakened, and are attacking the people of Abaton once more. The two kids must find the prison, and secure its denizens again. Pinocchio has the power of a great magical pearl to draw on, but when he does, he begins to turn back into wood again. He’s faced with an awful choice—can he give up his humanity to save his people?
Thanks to the determination of Pinocchio and Lazuli, and the help of many fascinating friends, including flying unicorns, mushroom warriors, a truly delightful superfluous worm, and the colorful characters who form this brigade of knights, there is hope for Abaton, despite the treachery that has threatened its peace.
The twin themes of the book, kids demonstrating their abilities and independence to the adults who want to stay in charge, and a message of tolerance shown in Pinocchio’s conviction that even “monsters” need not be seen as enemies (he himself, born a wooden automaton, is deemed a monster by many in Abaton), will resonate with young readers. The action-packed adventures, and the bevy of remarkable beings who take part in them, along with a magical world full of thunder seeds, sleeping sand, and underground forests, will delight them. Pinocchio is truly a hero to cheer for, and this is a great series to offer your fantasy-loving kid to get their summer reading starting out strong!
